As the former safety professional for AdaCounty and a member of the communications committee. Your efforts are certainly understandable but most likely will not even get a response from the ACSO or county commissioners. Simply it’s a safety issue, look at Canyon county due to gang activity and frequent monitoring of LE many years all CC LE. is encrypted.

And also look at Anchorage AK I was in the FD for 22 years 77- 99 and not only did APD go encrypted but EMS and FD all citing safety issues.
AST has been encrypted for years.

I appreciate your comment, but your reasoning is as flawed as all the powers that be around the country citing "officer or Fire safety " as the reasoning. It's simply untrue.
There are MANY sheriff's and departments around the country who are against this and of course not even thier opinions carry weight. There has been.one recently ehere the HEAD sheriff of the county had no idea it was even coming and his thoughts and actions meant nothing. Its nit something beimg voted on, its sunply being pussed thru the system. I'd love to see one case of officer or fire safety being jeopardized as the direct result of soneome using a scanner and going to a scene and commiting a crime or harming first repsponders. There aren't any! Plain and simple. that's why. Yet the powers that be will push these encryption deals thru despite what some want or even the thoughts of the actual Sheriff in charge. When there is a huge push to cover up the daily activities of said departments and you take away transparency there is a bigger problem. There have been encrypted "tac" and "ops" channels for years that work just fine and yet for some reason there is a large national push for encryption across the board. Makes one wonder why.

I certainly understand your response regarding my comments of safety, unfortunately city council, commissioners, mayors and department chiefs regulate the use of encryption with public safety communications feel this way. After working for the city of Anchorage for over 22 years and during my employment with Ada county I am unaware of any issues regarding fire department scene safety, relevant to scanner listeners. With AFD I was too busy to notice.

Generally, these folks just stand back with the crowds and watch the fire, however, some as we all know some overzealous folks try to beat the responders to the scene and certainly could cause a traffic hazard..

As far as the police go I think that’s relevant as I mentioned to gang or criminal activity and officer safety, but I also agree that having an unencrypted channel like a dispatch channel is great, keeps a public informed. Tactical channels and some sensitive information channels makes good sense to remain encrypted.

Asking after it's happened for several years is kinda strange. If its a reprogramming issue on the taxpayers dime, the agencies would have a valid point not to.

RadioShack Returns To U.S.As Product Brand

Last August, the brand was relaunched in the U.S. as a product rather than a retail brand. More than 400 RadioShack-branded products are now available not only on a new radioshack.com e-commerce site but through several dozen retailers across the country including Amazon and Walmart as well as five active – but unaffiliated – RadioShack stores in Pennsylvania, Virginia, North Carolina, and Tennessee.

PAT25 Blackhawk helo vs N709PS PSA Airlines 5342 CRJ 700 vs Helo from ICT to DCA ALL planes being diverted airport closed until further notice.

Appears no survivors at this time.

This argument for “transparency” against encryption is silly. Officer safety is a better reasonable argument for encryption. If you are OK with encrypted tac, and ops channels then all those “crocked” police would just use those channels to cover up all of their “criminal” activities. All dispatch channels are recorded and can be accessed via proper requests. Just about all agencies have body cams. If yours don’t and you want transparency fight for body cams. You can see the officers action and hear the radio comms on the video. There is no push to “cover up” daily activities. When an officer is pursing someone and that criminal can listen to tactical response to the pursuit it is no longer tactical. Or they say on the open dispatch “I am in pursuit switching to tac channel” they switch to the encrypted tac channel that you seem to think is ok. Now you lose “transparency” when you need it most. Just use the argument I want to be informed of what is going on around me in real time, that is more reasonable, or I just purchased this very expensive scanner and have a “right”🙄 to listen in on real time. This whole encryption argument will be a mute point when 2 way communications will be via LTE, and cellular. Is there any other government agency where you listen to everything they do all day from your living room. Maybe we should insist on transmitters in every government office that broadcasts over the entire county so we know what they saying and doing in real time. I remember back In the 90s I heard SSN, addresses phone numbers all over the air. It was an ID thief’s dream. With computers and CAD it is not as bad now, but I still hear PII over the radio to this day such as names and addresses.

I just ordered a BCD325P2 handheld. It arrives this Saturday. Now I'm wondering if I wasted my money or should return it. Is Ada County all encrypted now? I'm really only interested in fire, specifically the Hidden Springs FD as I live near it and would be helpful to know what happens out of it in the event of wildfires. Any thoughts appreciated.

ps: When I walk by and they have their garage doors open I see the FD people walking around with HT's that have VHF antennas on them (I've been ham for many years and can spot a VHF from UHF antenna a mile away). I wonder what is going on with them on VHF. Thoughts here too appreciated.

It appears from glancing at your county page there are VHF simulcast and appears to be only law is encrypted on the state trunk system. Fire TG appear digital only.

Fire is not encrypted. Only LE. SO and city PDs. Hidden Springs is staffed and run by Eagle FD. So you'll want to listen for those specific engine #s my only concern would be the BCD 352P2 and how is recieves any simulcast systems. Not sure as I dont use one around the valley.

I used to live in hidden Springs on 10th Ave. I was the photographer for the Boise city fire department for a number of years (1999-2020) and was living in HS when the station was finally manned in August 2022 by as the previous poster said eagle fire department, but the FD’s are on 800 MHz like the rest of the county.

Also, HS station is a relatively low response station, they run a QRU and some infrequent ems responses in HS, the manning of the station that occurred in 2022 was in response to HS residents complaining about high fire insurance rates and due to a residential structure fire that occurred by the second pool over on Humphries doing the summer of 20 It was almost a total loss and it took quite a while to be under control.

They have a brand new engine. Engine 45. Brush 45 and TRV 45. Things have changed. That was 5 years ago.

Its a 700 mhz P25 digital system. Not 800 mhz.

And how many line of duty deaths are actually attributable to unencrypted radio?

Nobody seems to talk about how it's just a money grab by Motorola "solutions", they're like the grim reaper going from department to department convincing them they need this massively overpriced tech. Then as if that wasn't enough, they're pedaling their frankly inferior body cameras as an alternative to AXONs.
