Any update ?

When do you think the detailed write up for the blog be posted! ? :p

Hopefully it will happen before the product is discontinued :p, I was really looking forward to:

Next up, we'll review the RF Space SDR-14 monitoring the HF bands. Utility, broadcast, and Ham listeners and operators will get a whole new perspective on how HF Spectrum is used

I get the distinct impression that they are going to abandon the product, It is my impression that there are less sharers on their radarbox network lately.

And whats up with the Shiptrax? will this product ever make it to production?

I'm getting ready to pull the trigger on getting the DPD antenna. Anyone got any suggestions on where to source proper cabling? Is the LMR400 on Scanner Master sufficient?

Well, you didn’t say how long of a run your coax would be…

I don’t have this setup but I am thinking of selling a few other toys to fund the project.
To get my antenna up 40’ I would need a 65’ run of coax.
If/when I get an SBS, I would use LMR-600…
I think it’s a good compromise between cost and dB loss as per the manufactures
specifications for 100 feet:
LMR-400 = 3.9 dB @ 900 MHz ($.80 a foot)
LMR-600 = 2.5 dB @ 900 MHz ($1.50 a foot)
LMR-900 = 1.7 dB @ 900 MHz ($5.00 a foot)

TexasTowers sells the LMR-600 for $1.49 a foot

I've had a lot of good performance from DavisRF's "Bury-Flex" ... it's got great specs up to 1GHz where you need it for Mode-S/ADS-B, and they will make you a custom-length cable with the right terminations for a reasonable price. You're probably not in this situation, but I can also say that once when I was in a hurry, they "got it done" for me. Nice people, great product.

Enjoy your DPD Antenna! I have a few of them and they are great.

UK/US setups for Plane Finder App

I am based in the UK and moved to a DPD antenna about 6 months ago.
Got stung for some import tax but was worth it!
Range now extends all the way to Northern France well over 150nm.

I've also set up some systems recently in the US and I've had great results with DPD antennas and BuryFlex cable. I've got a couple more going live soon.
In my experience Dave at DPD is always excellent and worth asking him if unsure on anything.

I run an SBS-1er although have recently been using the Radar Gadget boxes made in the UK along with Plane Plotter software. These boxes don't have all the software tools but are still well worth a look.
Radar Gadgets - ADS-B aircraft radio receiver - Virtual Radar

The reason I have been setting up systems is to improve coverage for my Plane Finder iPhone/iPad app.
Wrote this with a friend as we wanted to see our own data on the move!!
We also benefit from the goodwill of some SBS/Radarbox owners in the US, Canada and Europe who share their own data with us.
Share Planes with us
We only charge for the app and do not and will not charge for data access.

UK we have great coverage and we've just released this map at planefinder.net - Real Time Air Traffic - Now with Volcano ash cloud - BA Strikes
Anyone with Plane Plotter will also see the data we provide.

Really appreciate any help you can give in sharing data and hope my experience helps too.

Mark.

FAA Announces Performance Standards for Critical NextGen Avionics

Folks,

The United States is unfortunately behind the times in getting their aircraft that fly in the Continental US up to speed with ADS-B equipment, however most international capable aircraft are equipped, and in Europe just about every aircraft from/to/or there is equipped with ADS-B.

This should help the ADS-B sitiuation in the USA

Sorry if someone else already asked, but is this something anyone can buy, or would I need some sort of licence or certification??

Would love to have something like this, instead of using FlightTracker.com or whatever its called.

I want a Virtual Radar box bad, but as another member brought up, in the US, they are going to use a new Freq for Civil aircraft. I sent an email to Airnav asking them when they will produce a product that will monitor both freqs. Their reply to me was this:

"978 MHz is only used in the US and for GA aircraft and is likely to be removed in the future as the other frequency is used across the world. RadarBox does not use 978 MHz"

Since the FAA made it clear that to ease congestion, civil a/c will use 978, maybe Airvav will consider adding this to their box.

My money will sit in my pocket until a unit is produced that covers both freqs.

I would love to have a unit there right next to my remote scanner.... less than 1/4 mile from the airport. Airnav, please introduce an upgrade program for the US customers... Buy now, when we produce the new unit, ship it back to us and for $100 bucks, get the new one ;-)

I'm just saying you're going to wait a long time for the UAT stuff to arrive; I've had an SBS-1 now for almost 5 years ... even with no upgrade in the near future, it's been incredibly useful. Who knows if AirNav will even be in business when UAT is widely supported? :)

Thanks for the info MtnBiker, I was kinda scolded on another forum for even suggesting the idea of montoring aircraft with my own radar set up...I was looking into creating my own, but would rather buy something that works properly, and wont interfere with anything important :)

Its also nice to know other's out there enjoy Air monitoring as much as me, and are doing stuff like this.

Some more info on the UAT standard(978MHz) from another forum.

FAA doc. dated 5-28-10 - Starting reading from Page 11
http://www.freeflightsystems.com/docs/Final Rule for ADS-B Out_05-28-10.pdf

Here is a link to a possible 978 Mhz transponder.
http://www.freeflightsystems.com/docs/ADSB_APR10_FINAL.pdf

From another forum.
I have exchanged some emails with Kinetic and here is a reply from them
"I believe you are referring to a UAT standard.
We do not have plans, at this time, to release a unit based upon a clear understanding of the level of demand.

Technically, we have already developed a unit and should demand prove sufficient, we will progress it to manufacture."

Are they saying they want the standard to be 1090?

The great thing about standards is taht there are so many to choose from! :)

I think the issue is that a lot of work has gone into UAT for things like weather; they don't want the GA folks to have to install two systems ... so the UAT folks have figured out how to provide the ADS-B data on the UAT transport, so if you're in a Cessna and just want to get one box, the UAT one will be your choice. If you're an airliner, you're going to have to use the 1090 stuff. And that means for us that we'll need a new box ... but we were going to want to decode UAT anyway, right? :D
