Hfflunki:

I use several loops. My main one is a box crate loop I made from one of those plastic 'milk crates' you get at a department store.

Wrap about 23-25 turns of wire around it, attach each end of the looped wire to a 365 pf variable capacitor, and it works well (I just set it next to my radio -- small radios like the Sony SRF-59 or a walkman I just set inside it). I also have a Radio Shack loop and a Select-A-Tenna.

All three work very well for me -- the box crate loop has a bit more gain because it's bigger in area, but the others seem to hear most everything I hear with the box crate loop.

I haven't tried phasing or anything like that. The most creative I get with loops is placing them farther away from some of my radios (a walkman, and a DX-350A) when I want to enhance selectivity.

With my other radios (SR1, PR-D5, boombox) the selectivity's generally good enough I don't need to do that.

Great opening yesterday to the South...AT NOON!

I was dialing around the x-band yesterday around 12pm EST and noticed some stuff coming in that usually isn't there during the day. 1700 WEUP-AL was coming in well and tuning around more I noticed some other Southern stuff was skipping in as well between 1600-1700. 1600 WAOS-GA was dominating the channel with no sign of usual WAAM Ann Arbor. With just a few minutes before noon TOH I decided to make a spectrum recording with the Perseus. During recording I parked it on 1540 since I was hearing religious programming, and I was hoping for needed KTGG Spring Arbor, MI. I was surprised when the station IDed as WTBI South Carolina, completely in the clear with a decent signal, at noon! Seems I stumbled on a good opening to the South with a pipeline to NC/SC. Highlights heard here at noon include these relogs:

1170 WCXN-NC
1290 WHKY-NC
1310 WISE-NC
1350 WZGM-NC
1360 WELP-SC
1520 WDSL-NC
1550 WKBA-VA

And these new logs:

880 WPIP-NC mixing with WRFD
1010 WKJW-NC
1210 WANB-PA
1400 WEOA-IN
1430 WEEF-IL under WION
1540 WTBI-SC
1600 WTZQ-NC during WAOS fade w/ no sign of usual WAAM

These were all heard using the South D-KAZ antenna.

Listening again today at the same time revealed a mostly dead dial with a few things skipping in from 200-300 miles out. In other words, typical daytime skywave this time of year for me.

Time for me to jump back into the game, so yesterday I hooked up with a very nice ham fella in Chicago via Craigslist and I bought his Icom R75 receiver. I'm living in a new QTH 25 miles from where I lived the past 45 years, so the AM BCB band is different enough to warrant starting ALL OVER with a new log. I can still hear most of the same locals, really it's a far enough of a move to be a game changer.

I'm starting all over antenna-wise too. I'm renting a very small house with a very small yard, however it's at the end of a dead end road that juts out into a small lake peninsula. I'm pretty much surrounded by water 270 degrees for a half mile. So, with all this frozen water around me how could I resist laying out some wire onto the lake ice? So, last night I put out 200 ft. I haven't really explored the ice too much yet, so that was as far as I dare venture.

Here's my first logging: "La Radio" or RCN Baranquilla, Colombia over WJR Detroit on 760khz.

More to come I promise!

Welcome back to the game K9RZZ. You're directly across the big lake from me so it's always interesting to compare notes. Keep the logs coming. The thought of having to start a new logbook all over again would scare the heck out of me (I'm fast approaching 1600 heard here), but I completely understand where you're coming from. That ice BOG should do nicely. Run two wires parallel of slightly different lengths, phase them, and you'll have a killer receive antenna which should also do nicely on the lower shortwave bands.

Not a broadcast station I know, but it is Longwave...

1015z Monday 12th Port McQuarie New South Wales NDB 395kHz Ident PMQ 1416miles! On the same frequency MER Merimbula New South Wales 1414miles - fortunately their MCW idents don't always coincide!
45ft T2FD up 15feet, Degen 7313 receiver on headphones! Good preselector in the receiver keeps the BC band hash out.

Ultralight DXing Report - Launceston Tasmania

Date: 01/02/2015
Time: 20:30 - 20:50
Location: Backyard, Home Launceston Tasmania
Radio: 7.5” Loopstick Tecsun PL-380
Total stations logged: 58
New stations logged: 0
Notes: This has been my first serious Ultralight DXing session in a few weeks. Tonight our daughter is staying with her grandparents so I took the chance to do a session from my backyard around sunset, this session was undertaken just after my long term ultralight dxing project frequencies were checked. Overall I logged 58 stations; these were all stations I have logged in the past. I noticed some interesting signals around 1200KHz - 1300KHz with the signals being received at very strong levels compared to normal. A number of “regular” copy stations from Victoria and NSW were missing in bad band noise; this was most noticeable up until 800KHz where signals stated to improve again. 7BU and 7AD were both very quite again, they were heard but not at anywhere near the signal level I would have expected, this has been an issue for a little while now.
Overall this was a really enjoyable session and it was nice to get my “DXing” feet wet again.

Photos and video of my loggings is available here: Ultralight DXing: Ultralight DXing Report - Launceston Tasmania - 01/02/2015

Ultralight DXing Report - Launceston Tasmania

Date: 03/02/2015
Time: 15:35 - 15:55
Location: Royal Park, Launceston Tasmania
Radio: 7.5” Loopstick Tecsun PL-380
Total stations logged: 14
New stations logged: 0
Notes: Yesterday afternoon my wife was unwell and resting following her operation last week. I took our daughter for a walk and sort of just kept going where I ended up at our local Bunnings. On the walk back I stopped at Royal Park and did a quick portable ultralight DXing session.
I logged the following stations:
531 3GG
540 7SD
558 7BU
585 7RN
594 3WV
621 3RN
693 3AW
747 7PB
774 3LO
828 3GI
855 3CR
864 7RPH
900 7AD
1008 0_HPON (Launceston)

Signals were fairly good with most stations being up at around the normal signal level or even in some cases a little bit better. This location was really enjoyable and I am hoping to undertake a night time session from this location shortly.
