Some NW US area DXers heard WWL recently (mixing in with the other Western US stations on 870) -- any time WWL is heard in the NW it's a sign of good DX conditions.

Flaming Gorge WY logs

Hello group. I just got back from probably one of the best spots yet using my RF-Pro 1B loop.I decided to make the trip over to the Flaming Gorge WY location. The best part is the fact it is 50+ miles away from ANY radio station and there was a station on every freq from 530-1700. This is one of the biggest reasons why I picked this spot. NO POWER LINES and NO Noise. The best picks was 530 from Turks and Caicos island (or Cuba) and another Spanish speaking station on top of that which I suspect is CIAO?

CHHA 1610 was another and even though there were a few TIS stations under this, it still made the trek. Even though this is a great DXing catch, I for one still wish there were NO full powered licensed stations on this frequency. Trying to catch the furthest TIS station is more interesting.

For those of you who are debating on getting this loop, I highly suggest it. Here is a few other logs:
530 Radio Vision Christiana _ Turks and Caicos Island 50,000 watt blow torch. This one seems to be play8ng Muzak style music with a woman speaking spanish
540 KNMX Las Vegas NM - Also CBK Regina, SK
550 KRAI Craig, CO
560 KLZ Denver with KMON Great Falls underneath
570 KNRS Salt Lake City with WNAX Yankton, SD underneath
580 WIBW Topeka KS
590 KID Idaho Falls, ID with a ton of other stations unreadable. The ONLY way I could pull this one out was due to using a loop
600 KSJB Jamestown, ND pretty clear WITHOUT KOGO San Diego which was nice
610 KVNU Logan, UT
620 KTAR Phoenix AZ along with KJOL Grand Junction CO
630 KHOW Denver CO
640 KFI Los Angeles along with 2 other unid'd Spanish stations
650 KMTI Manti, UT
660 KTNN Window Rock AZ of course. But was also able to hear 660 News CFFR Calgary AB when nulling out KTNN
670 KLTT Denver CO. This is another annoying station that covers up a lot of other stations that used to come in.
680 KNBR San Francisco CA. This is the ONLY station from SF that made it this far.
690 UNID ESPN Radio- How many other listeners are annoyed by these satellite sports stations that never ID?
700 KALL Salt Lake City, UT.
710 KNUS Denver and KBMB Black Canyon City AZ
720 KDWN Las Vegas NV and WGN Chicago
730 CHMJ Traffic Channel Vancouver BC- This station is weird, ONLY Traffic and nothing else is heard
740 KIDR Phoenix AZ
750 KOAL Price, UT
760 KDSP Denver CO - They changed calls it seems
770 KKOB Albuquerque NM
780 WBBM Chicago. No existence of KOH Reno that night.
790 Unable to pull anything out
800 XEROCK Ciudad Juarez
810 Country station heard but unable to ID due to splatter from XEROCK 800
820 WBAP Dallas TX
830 WCCO Minneapolis MN
840 KXNT Las Vegas NV
850 KOA Denver
870 WWL New Orleans LA
880 KRVN Lexington NE
890 WLS Chicago
920 KVEL Vernal UT
930 KSEI Pocatello ID
940 KMER Kemmerer WY
950 KKSE Denver CO
960-980 too much graveyard (rumble)
990 XECL Mexicali BC! This is not a 50,000 watt station either. At around 11:00 PM CBW in Winnipeg MB was the dominate the rest of the night here. Was still able to hear XECL when the loop was turned the right way but not too well.
1000 KOMO Seattle
1010 CBR Calgary along with an unid spanish pop music station
1020 KTNQ Los Angeles CA
1030 KTWO Casper WY
1040 WHO Des Moines IA
1050 Another UNID ESPN Radio Center
1060 KRCN Denver, CO
1070 KNX Los Angeles
1080 KRLD Dallas TX
1090 KMXA Denver CO
1100 KNZZ Grand Junction CO
1110 KFAB Omaha NE
1120 KMOX Saint Louis MO. A rare catch this far west for me
1130 CKWX Vancouver BC
1140 UNID Town Hall Radio Network
1150 KSAL Salina KS
1160 KSL Salt Lake City
1170 KFAQ Tulsa, OK
1180 KOIL Omaha NE
1190 KEX Portland along with an UNID station playing bluegrass
1200 WOAI San Antonio TX
1210 KHAT Laramie WY - pretty strong and dominate
1220 KLDC Denver. Very hard to make the call out but it seems to be the only religious station that was close to my locale and playing gospel
1230-1270 were unable to produce any decent results. Will have to focus on these in the winter time
1280 (THE ZONE) I am assuming this is KNZS Salt Lake City UT. Another local I tried to get away from. Even at 180 miles to the east, I still could not hear anything under this annoying station. Yuck.
1290 KOUU Pocatello ID
1300 Station Black Programming - In other words a dead carrier with no audio except for the noise from adjacent stations on 1290 and 1310. Probably a station that is supposed to cease operations at sundown. Somehow they think that by just turning off the audio is all that matters. Don't worry about a dead carrier LOL!
1310 KFKA Greeley CO
1320 KFNZ Salt Lake City along with several UNID stations
1330 KGAK (All Navajo All The Time) Gallup NM
1340 Too much Rumble
1350 KSRO! Santa Rosa CA. Very rare to hear it this far. I cannot even hear this in SLC
1360 KPXQ Phoenix AZ and KHNC Johnstown CO
1370 KSOP South Salt Lake City UT
1380 KSRV Ontario, OR
1390 KGNU Denver, CO - This was heard just before sunset. After sunset, this station was a mess. The ONLY reason it was heard was using the loop
1400 Too much rumble
1410 UNID Country station using the term (AM 1410 and 104.9 FM Country)
1420 KTOE Mankato MN - Another rare catch this far west
1430 KLO Ogden UT and KEZW Aurora CO (Cruisin' 1430)
1440 KFNY Riverside CA. Heard this one at sunset then it was gone under the rumble mess
1470 (News-Talk 1470) NO ID of course
1480 KYOS Merced CA Head at Sunset then gone when dark
1490 KUGR Green River, WY. The ONLY reason this station was heard was due to being 40 miles from me. After dark, it was under the rumble never to be heard again. However, at around 7:00 AM MST another station came on the air and was off frequency by .500 hz! Unable to identify which one it was
1500 KSTP St. Paul MN- It was nice NOT hearing KSJX in San Jose CA for a change
1510 KGA Spokane WA
1520 KOKC Okla City
1530 KFBK Sacramento CA and KQSC Colorado Springs CO
1540 KXEL Waterloo IA
1550 KMRI West Valley City UT
1560 KKAA Aberdeen SD
1570 KPRO Riverside, CA - This station is really good with nulling the signal to the west. They can travel over 800 miles in all other directions but you CANNOT hear them at all over 20 miles going towards Los Angeles.
1580 KBLA Los Angeles CA
1590 Too much rumble noise to pull anything out
1600 KIVA Albuquerque NM - There was a lot of rumble noise on here but with the loop this station was heard over it all
1610 Wyoming Dept. of transportation Evanston WY. The only way I was able to make this out is they play the DTMF noise of *#* (star pound star) which is the command for updating the Digital recording systems for the LPB TIS transmitter systems. The Evanston WY one is the only one in the state that I have heard play this. The others do not.
1620 KSMH Sacramento CA
1630 KRND Fox Farm WY
1640 Spanish UNID Station - unknown
1650 KBJD Denver CO
1660 UNID TIS station
1690 KDMT Denver CO. - (MONEY TALK! ALL MONEY ALL THE TIME!) was all that was given on this station. NO ID! Just curious, does anyone actually listen to this stuff 24/7? It was on in Los Angeles for 2 years and it died a painful death because of low ratings.
1700 XEPE Tecate BC. Since there are not many stations on 1700, this gives XEPE an open range.

This as done all in one night. I may have missed a lot of catches but at 4:30 AM I decided to go to sleep as I was up for work at 5 am and then drove 180 miles to this location. Will post more later from another location. I am also going to start doing YT vids for ones listening pleasure :)

This was done using a Sony Radio model GT270MP AM/FM and SW. I am able to hook the loop directly to my radio using an adapter to switch from the trucks antenna to the loop. For the hard stations, my Yaesu FT857D was used.

Stay Tuned!

Impressive list for one night!

I like to travel at night when I go on long car trips and usually pass the time going up and down the AM dial as I travel down the road... But that's dedication taking a loop along specifically for AM DXing..

Great session! Interesting that you couldn't quite crack east of the Mississippi river, but I'm sure given a few nights, you would.

Regarding 530khz, I believe Turks and Caicos is off the air now, so yes, you had Cuba and Toronto (Oh, there's your east coast - almost).

Nice job! :)

Radioguy99, very interesting log. It's always fun to get away from the city and see what one can hear.

A bit surprised you didn't hear anything else on 1700 but XEPE; here in the PNW KVNS Brownsville, KBGG Iowa, and a Tejano station out of Dallas are often heard.

You didn't catch the Deportes station out of El Paso (KSVE)... I would have thought they would boom into Wyoming.

I take it KBRE 1660 weakens to the east. They're heard nightly here.

Nice setup you've got for your van.

nice setup. i really like the way it ataches to the tire mount.

Thanks. It is actually a trailer hitch mount that I made with a Simpson Strong Tie. I bought that when I got my first car back in 1994 and it has held up to some of the most violent winds on the mountain tops without any problem.

Thanks for all the great replies everyone. Before the weather starts getting crappy again and I put my truck away for the winter, I do want to pick out another spot to do this, preferably for at least 3 nights to try and get as many logs as possible as one night is just not enough. I really like this antenna and have done everything possible to make it work mobile but it does have it's downfalls. Like one of the main problems is the lousy 24 Volt AC power supply....Yes, AC. I still have small issues on 1450-1470 with the AC (hum) but it's not as bad at night. I am using the cleanest DC/AC inverter possible and it does help. I even contacted DX Engineering to see if there was anyway around this problem because I hate being limited to just one location and when you live in the city like I do, this hobby really blows because of the local garbage. In this hobby the name of the game is to get away from the local junk and go where the band is free.

I think for the next go around I need to get over too Eastern WY or the west end of Nebraska to see if I can log any of the airport beacons below .500. You are lucky k9rzz as you are in the middle. Which is one of the big reasons why I miss living in MN.

New logs heard during the month of September, and a British relog. Listening from Western Michigan. Times / dates in UTC. Perseus SDR & mostly a reversible north-south D-KAZ and sometimes phased BOGs as noted:

580 WTAG Worcester, MA. - 1005 UTC 9/4/206 - Poor with FOX News at TOH and into "local weather brought to you by the New England Truck Solutions Weather Center" at 1005 UTC followed by W-T-A-G calls and WTAG.com mention, creeping into the back of the SW BOGs.

720 Radio Catolica Managua, Nicaragua - 0200 UTC 9/5/2016 - With Spanish religious music and YL talk backgrounding WGN's flamethrower signal. Weak but good enough to compare against their live webstream to confirm reception, on South D-KAZ during slight au cx.

720 WVCC Hogansville, GA. - 0112 UTC 9/14/2016 - Thanks to a DX tip, daytimer on late way under dominant WGN with Larry Elder talk show // to WVCC webstream, on the South D-KAZ.

800 WPJM Greer, SC. - 0041 UTC 9/4/2016 - With black gospel song over GY-like station roar easily // to WPJM webstream during slight au cx, on South D-KAZ.

870 KJMP - Pierce, CO. - 1002 UTC 9/4/2016 - Taking over WWL with The Contours song "Do You Love Me", great signal and into ID: "Rocking and Rolling on the __?__, the Big 8-7, K-J-M-P, Pierce/Fort Collins" and into Chuck Berry's "Johnny B. Goode", SW BOGs.

910 Radio Cadena Agramonte, Cuba - 0258 UTC 9/3/2016 - From poor to strong during au cx with SS music, Cuba talk, and Radio Cadena / Camagüey mentions, on the South D-KAZ.

950 WXLW Indianapolis, IN. - 0200 UTC 9/6/2016 - Dominant with Freedom 95 slogan and legal TOH ID, on South D-KAZ.

1050 CJNB North Battleford, SK. - 1100 UTC 9/11/2016 - With modern c/w music and legal ID at TOH with mention of FM 102.3 and slogan "Today's Country", soon lost to WTKA on the North D-KAZ.

1150 KASM Albany, MN. - 1106 UTC 9/11/2016 - Signing on the air with southern gospel music and multi-ID given at 1106 UTC for KASM & KDDG, on the North D-KAZ over WHBY.

1150 CJSL Estevan, SK. - 1057 UTC 9/11/2016 - Extremely faint under WHBY with slogan "CJ 11-50" after c/w song ended, then calls given and soon lost again when KASM signed on, North D-KAZ.

1210 KRSV Afton, WY. - 1101 UTC 9/18/2016 - Poor with C/W music and this OM ID given at 1101 UTC: "K-R-S-V, 12-10 AM, Black." Checking the KRSV online stream later that night confirms their slogan is cut-off at the end. What should be "12-10 AM, Black Mountain Country" comes out as just "12-10 AM, Black." Fair off-frequency het also noted on 1210.14 (first noted here back in Jan. 2013 and still remains a mystery for me). On North D-KAZ.

1220 CJRB Boissevain, MB. - 1058 UTC 9/18/2016 - Very weak OM with "You've been listening to classics......on C-J-R-B....AM twelve...." and then into CJRB News, on North D-KAZ.

1230 WKLK Cloquet, MN. - 0300 UTC 9/24/2016 - Very clear YL ID at TOH: "Thank you for listening to the area's best music right here in Minnesota's northwoods. AP Radio News is next, here on AM 12-30 W-K-L-K Cloquet." On the North D-KAZ.

1240 KCCR Pierre, SD. - 1100 UTC 9/20/2016 - Just above the GY noise with partial OM slogan: "...City Radio" and clear calls and city during legal TOH ID while mixing with WJMC, on the North D-KAZ.

1330 CJYM Rosetown, SK. - 1000 UTC 9/15/2016 - Under WVHI with local weather forecast with temps given in Celseus, faint call sign given with announcement "We are classic hits..", on North D-KAZ.

1400 WCCY Houghton, MI. - 1100 UTC 9/24/2016 - Legal ID at TOH and into network news, good during ID and soon lost again, on the North D-KAZ.

1400 KEYL Long Prairie, MN. - 1059 UTC 9/27/2016 - Pop-up OM ID out of the noise: "Your home for....Minnesota, K-E-Y-L, Long Prairie" then lost again after TOH, on the North D-KAZ.

1450 WFMB Springfield, IL. - 0300 UTC 9/5/2016 - Poor in the GY mix, no discernible calls but a clear "Sportsradio 14-50 and FM 107.1" mention matching WFMB, on the South D-KAZ.

1480 WVOV Bridgeport, AL. - 0200 UTC 9/5/2016 - Very poor under dominating WJBM with no sign of semi-local WGVU. Legal ID at TOH finally realized under WJBM after a few times playing back the recording, during au cx on the South D-KAZ.

1480 KAUS Austin, MN. - 1059 UTC 9/20/2016 - Weak with partial OM slogan and solid call letters heard: "Mower County's Voice....K-A-U-S, Austin" followed by FOX News at TOH, mostly alone on the North D-KAZ.

1490 KXRA Alexandria, MN. - 1059 UTC 9/20/2016 - With live/local YL reading weather and then into "K-X-R-A Alexandria" (with possible second callsign given) and dot com website mention, poor and just above the GY roar, on the North D-KAZ.

1500 WQCR Alabaster, AL. - 0202 UTC 9/5/2016 - Over WLQV with SS music, calls and "Juan" slogans, presumed still on day power, on South D-KAZ.

1620 KYIZ Renton, WA. - 0215 UTC 9/25/2016 - Fair signal despite t-storm static with urban ac music with two songs easily // to their webstream, on the North D-KAZ.

1580 WZKY Albemarle, NC. - 0343 UTC 9/3/206 - With CCR tune and other oldies, several "W-Z-K-Y" & "AM stereo" mentions during fade-up and mention of North Carolina during local weather forecast, on the South D-KAZ.

1700 WQEU865 Toledo, OH. - 2317 UTC 9/3/206 - With YL robo looped message: "This is the travel time information station, provided by the Ohio Department of Transportation. This message is current as of 7:15pm, Saturday, September 3rd, 2016. For additional traffic information, please go to www.ohgo.com" Careful listening also reveals what appears to be a second identical station underneath repeating the same loop, however the FCC only shows one ODT outlet on 1700. WQEU865 calls & Toledo mention given at 2321 UTC. On the South D-KAZ.

==================

1215 Absolute Radio, UK - 0010+ UTC 9/24/2016 - Best TA of the night with a fair and steady signal lasting for at least an hour with a great selection of modern rock and alternative music from The Red Hot Chili Peppers, Tears for Fears, Garbage, The Smiths, and even some Bob Marley at entertainment level at times. Several "easy" IDs given and signal the best on the North D-KAZ. Relog but good to hear them here again.

Heard WWL on 870 behind regional KFLD NW-SE on a Sony Walkman (a WM-FX241 I got at a thrift store for $2) and a loop. Perhaps DX season has started. :)

Also hearing a few interesting NDB's on Longwave (on my DX-398), but not sure if they're DX or not. Haven't tuned LW in years.

My roots also go back to AM DXing. I still do it now and then. I picked up a Wellbrook loop in the spring and it does make a difference.

What makes it difficult these days are all the syndicated programs. -- Particularly sports and talk. They don't ID that often... You usually have to wait for the top and bottom of the hour and hope they haven't faded by then.

What is good these days is the internet. If you're not sure of a station, you can sometimes find the stations streamcast on the web and compare it with what you're hearing.

But anyway... Two days ago using the loop, I snagged these two for the first time.

If its any help I've been listening to low power stations on extended band and mid band they call often and jum p low later at night . but most the action in low power were I am is from 1000-to end of band and 700-down the best time for low power is 2 hours after gray line on. Of course I haven't done this in a couple years religiously so I'm speaking prior knowledge.

I just copied a low power station on 1590.. WLRS New Albany IN. It's Spanish which I don't speak, but the nickname of the station is La Ponderosa.. I heard the announcer say it plain as day :)

The FCC page shows they drop the power to 233 Watts after dark. (This was at 10:00 PM Indiana Time so they must have been broadcasting at low power by then). Not bad for a 1000 mile hop.

Right now I'm listening to 1590 Khz.. There are about five stations on top of each other, fading in and out. Haven't made out call sign yet.

Jwt873 those are some great low power or graveyard station catches . if you get really into it consider finding a radio with a narrow /wide switch or ssb .to break up those pile ups.or you can use a old HiFi eq if you have one.
