Here is my county's EMA setup:

VHF Hi Band- The -911 Ops chan, and SO Primary, as well as Statewide Fire Mutual Aids...Statewide Law Hi Band.... and we monitor all the local, and state Hi Band stuff.... FEMA's net, and the Natchez Trace nets.

VHF Lo Band- The old MEMA designations, Statewide Law Lo Band, the old Fire Lo Band freq is still programmed, and we monitor MHP, MDOT, and a nieghboring County's SO chans... and MSNG

And we of course have a SatNet console from MEMA for thier primary coms,... also monitored on this system is MDWF&P, MS Dept. of Health, and have access to nationwide EMA's, FEMA, and a HomeSec chan on the SatNet.

Sounds good. Not familiar with a SatNet. Is that like a network of sat phones???

A local Huntsville company is building a TEAM vehicle for us that will have satellite capability http://www.firstresponseteam.com/main/news.htm I will be one of the employees trained to operate it. Alabama will have several of these around the state.

Satellite Radio Network....

Sorta like trunking.. but using a satellite instead of land based towers.

Every agency on it has a specific Talkgroup, just like in trunking.... but unlike the limitations of a TRS.... we can punch a button or three, and talk to KY EMA clearly.

Magor advantage: Hurricanes knock down the towers on the coastal regions... MEMA still is chatting away with all the regional EOC's.. on satellite.... Thus we get instant up to date coms and info on whats possibly comming our way, and can respond to calls for info or assistance whil conventional, and TRS's are out of action. Same applies to HAM, Landline Phone, and to Cellular coms.... While they are in the dark so to speak.. there is still communication happening.

Interesting. One day when the price of per minute satellite useage drops, I see more people switching to similar technology. Eventually, there may even be less cell phone towers around.

From my understanding from talking to MS Department of Wildlife, Fisheries, and Parks, and MEMA, its not really that expensive.. the equipment was even cheaper to get installed and all than a trunked system would be. MEMA, and F&W use it almost exclusively now.

The only time they use conventional is for local comms with various agencies, or if there is a technical glitch,.. which is very rare.

Also I believe that NM State Police use SatNet for thier MDS's.

Do they have handheld radios on this system or are you tied to a vehicle mounted unit?

All the SatNets for F&W are mobiles, with conventional HT's patched to the mobiles. I have not looked too closely at any MEMA FR's to see what is on the belts. MDH has mobiles and patched HT's. We of course at the County level only have the consoles and use our VHF to talk.... though of course patching can be done simply with a few button presses.

(I am an VFF/FR, thus my main toys are Motorola mobile, and HT, and occaisionally do some dispatch for our EOC.)
