The road channels are 160.455 (Buckingham Branch RR) and 160.95 (Norfolk Southern RR). These should go for Amtrak trains west and east of Charlottesville respectively. Most likely only your engineer and conductors are using radios, and this is where they would be tuned for all internal train comms.

Some of the sleeper trains may have radios for the onboard services people,(porters, food service, etc.) but I don't know if this is true of the Cardinal. If they have radios, they could be on RR freqs (not the road channels) or something else entirely. 160.92 might be worth a try. It's been some years, but if I remember right the EB and WB Cardinals meet in Charlottesville around 4p on Sundays.

AMTRAK frequencies in Charlotte, Va.

WAHOOS4LIFE, N4JRI is correct in the frequencies he submitted to you, in non-AMTRAK territory they have trackage rights from the home railroad & thusly use the home roads licensed frequencies for movement & operations. I am not familiar with the size of the station in question however most of AMTRAKS more sizable stations use portables on 160.65 MHz for station operations & some smaller stations that use them are not reflected on the FCC database. As for on-train comms. anything goes, I travel extensively by AMTRAK & have even seen sleeper train crews (porters, food service, passenger attendants, etc.) use FRS-GMRS radios, contrary to official AMTRAK policy I'm sure but whatever gets the job done. Check the site below & it will confirm what N4JRI gave you.
Good luck

Thanks, FLRAILMAN. Charlottesville only services the Cardinal and the Crescent, but they might have enough activity at times to show up on 160.65, it's sure worth a try. Thanks for the reminder about that freqs. The Richmond station has been known to use 457.900 [146.2] for station services, but it's been a while.

Good tip on the FRS thing. You can never go wrong keeping all the low power stuff scanning.

Once when the Amtrak guys were here to reverse the engines on the Cardinal (to turn it around due to an outage in WV) they were using the Amtrak freq from DC. Don't remember what it was (sorry) but it is the one listed everywhere.

I've ridden both trains from here and can confirm that they use the host's road freqs.

I remember I had a bunch of Amtrak freqs in the scanner in Union Station in DC and they were VERY busy, especially the baggage handlers.

It's probably 160.92. I've heard them use it out-of-territory in several cases. Possibly on the Cardinal.

BTW, a great Sunday trip (if it still exists) is to catch the Cardinal in Huntington, WV and ride it into Charlottesville. It's a largely riverside run, and when I did it there was a narrator onboard from Huntington to White Sulphur Springs. Came into Charlottesville at 4p and lo & behold there was the WB Cardinal.
