Read back, thats another issue already answered, actually both were....

I only found a link to another thread regarding the bluetooth issue. No bluetooth on this model. Nothing on the per channel basis of the attenuator.

I must not be able to see for looking!

No NAC, and wrong thread for that discussion.

ATT is both by channel and able to be toggled globally.

Apparently it was in one of the posts the mods removed...... :(

P25 One-Channel Trunking

"P25 One-Channel Trunking – supports P25 conventional systems that include both NAC and TGID access control on a single frequency"

I was hoping this feature would be offered, but I am sort of at a loss for a better name. It is not trunking, but maybe just "Conventional P25 Talk Group ID" is an appropriate name for this.

>>SNIP<<P25 "Single Frequency Trunking" will be handled like a trunked system that you can only have one frequency in, but can have NAC assigned to. There is no industry name for this that we have been able to find, so for now it is "P25 Single Frequency Trunking." Actually, I have an opportunity to change this to something else for about 48 hours if someone knows a better term. It is most analogous to EDACS SCAT (in that neither of these are truly "trunking" although they have some of the attributes).>>SNIP<<

How about 'Conventional P25 Addressing?' or 'Conventional P25 decode & addressing.'
adding 'Trunking' might confuse people. Just a thought.

Who knows, maybe around the time Provoice appears on a scanner, thats another unknown, at one time the idea of a scanner being able to trunk was an unknown too.

I may have missed this topic but will we ever see LTR Passport on either 396?

Thanks

I find the settable IF very intriguing. Now that is a new feature for a scanner!

Will you have the ability to set TGs as "digital only" on the 396XT, like on the 996? I did not see mention of that in the specs.

I'm curious why so many 396T owners are interested in the 396XT?

Aren't these scanners going to be functionally equivalent for the most part? Which bells and whistles on the 396XT would justify the upgrade?

For me it is the 500 talkgroups per system versus the 200 of the 396T and 250 of the 996T.

I kinda like the name "P25 Single Frequency Cluster." since you would have a "cluster" of users all on one frequency with various talkgroups being sent on the same frequency, and without that mode in the scanner it would be a "Cluster" to listen to. :)

To be honest, I actually think that "Trunking" correctly describes this situation, or at least is a close enough term to accurately describe the situation. Besides, do we really need more confusing terminology?

"While each type of trunking system operates a little differently, they all work on the same basic premise: even in a system with a lot of users, only a few users are ever transmitting at any one time. Instead of being assigned a frequency, as with conventional systems, each group is assigned a talk group ID." [This quote was taken from Uniden's BCD996T Scanner Users Manual]

These single channel systems function in a similar way. Whether it is one channel or fifty channels, the systems are essentially doing the same thing: consolidating communications from any number of talkgroups into fewer frequencies. In this case, one.

Works for me, anyhow. But then again, they don't pay me squat for my radio knowledge. And for good reason!

Question For Upman

I waited on the purchase of a 396 and I'm glad I did. I can't wait to see it in person. Now,you stated that there are limitations with the 396T and that was a big factor in determining the need for a new scanner altogether with new hardware/software ect. My question is simple. Do you see the same limitations in the current 996? As you can imagine, most of us would love a base / mobile version of this new 396. I would like to hear your thoughts and comments on this matter, as it is likely to come up more and more.

GTO: Yes, the scanner will have All/Digital/Analog selection for channels.

Manny: I am always thinking about the next gen of stuff. However, we don't start talking about new models until about 3 months out from shipping. So, a replacement for the 996 is at least 3 months out (but that could mean 3 years).

Since it's not actually "trunking", hot about "Single Frequency Sharing"?

New toy either way for me.

Well, that answer leaves me 2 choices both of which I like. One, is getting a new radio in about 3 months time. That is great because I would just LOVE a 996 with the new 396 features. The second choice is just getting the new 396 and staying with my current 996 which I love and just sit patiently waiting a few years. So either way, a new toy for me next year. Thank You for your quick reply.

Digital TV chipsets cost about $30 (parts cost, not including integration, RF, etc). You cannot decode audio without decoding the full digital stream (i.e. it is just as difficult to get a single audio stream out of the data as it is the full video).

Yes! And P25 data streams are exactly the same, so why not simply include P25 Radio IDs, Key ID's, Algo IDs, etc etc. Since all the P25 decoding framework is obviously already in place this would require a trivial amount of extra code to achieve and would be a significant value-add for advanced users (which are the target audience for an relatively expensive digital scanner)

regards,
Matt
