UPMan - how is the scanner doing the priority on trunking? Guess im confused on that.
I thought that wouldnt be possible since a second receiver needs to listen to the control channel

Is the keypad lit up in different colours as well? I know the 396T is lit up just wondering if the BCD396XT is the same

Probably the hottest features for everyday scanning are:

  • Multisite Trunking
  • Analog/Digital/All Channel Selection
  • NAC support
  • Temporary Lockout
  • System / Channel Number Tagging
  • Priority on Trunking

Of course, I'm rather fond of all the new features, but the above are probably the ones that will get the most use.

Hey Paul,

Is there any way to make the rotary encoder a little less annoying? The clicking drives me insane!

P25 "Single Frequency Trunking" will be handled like a trunked system that you can only have one frequency in, but can have NAC assigned to. There is no industry name for this that we have been able to find, so for now it is "P25 Single Frequency Trunking." Actually, I have an opportunity to change this to something else for about 48 hours if someone knows a better term. It is most analogous to EDACS SCAT (in that neither of these are truly "trunking" although they have some of the attributes).
Motorola's term for it is "ASTRO Conventional Talkgroup."

"P25 Conventional Talkgroup" sounds nice and logical imho.

Trunking Priority only works when the scanner is on the control channel (i.e. scanning an idle system or during the channel delay time). When it gets a OSW, it will evaluate all channel grants in the OSW and go to the channel that has the highest priority set in the scanner.

Preemptive trunking (only works on Motorola Analog) will monitor the low-speed data (LSD) on the voice channel. If a channel is flagged as priority on the system (i.e. by the trasmitter/controller), then it will show up in the LSD when it is active on another channel. If you have flagged a channel as priority in the scanner (i.e. the receiver side) and the scanner sees that TGID come throught the LSD, it will pre-empt the current transmssion in favor of the priority transmission.

Do you mean on some other model? Do you mean the keybeep (which you can adjust the volume for)?

On the 396. The rotary encoder on the top is quite annoying. A smoother one would be desired. One like on the BCT15

Guys, I visited this Uniden forum for the first time today. I normally hang out in the North Carolina Forum. My mission today is to make a final decision on purchasing a digital portable scanner. After spending a couple hours bouncing around these forums I sill have many questions.

I have a Uniden 996T and a bunch of Analog systems. Can you tell me how similar and different the Uniden 396T is compared to the 996T? Can I use the same UASD files for both, for example? Will Uniden announce a new product within the next couple months? Any advice will help me make sure I spend my $500 wisely, especially since I have to contribute to the $700B bailout plan.

If I was the decision maker, I would go for that...I may have some small influence on how we treat them here but beyond that...

Hey Bri-
If you are looking for a great handheld to monitor VIPER (& Cary) Wait for a little longer until the 396xt comes out...

UPMAN,
I think I seen this in the past but now I figure how I did it. When on a EDAC Wide system if I press down on the Func. and the knob to show my squelch I have a bar that runs above it. I notice that it will flash in squence of the LCN number that is being used. Is this taken from the way the scanner is program or is it reading the data for the LNC number?

This will be display mode 3 (so it can be a persistent display). It will work if you program in all the channels for a Motorola system (i.e. it won't work if you just put in the control channels and set the scanner to CCh Only).

Marshall, you are everywhere :) Like a kid in a candy store, it will be hard to wait. I will study the entries on this forum. I mistakenly thought this forume was an older forum.

Lou, that is one reason (RR) that I suggested P25C ...... nice and short for the DB, but I guess it could be P25CT as well.....

Not sure how that could be annoying, the key beeps are so I just turn those off on every radio I have.

Paul:

Is there a chance that there will be the ability to display the RadioID during the transmissions as in the GRE models ? This is one feature that would be very nice to see in the new models.
