The right way is to put a spark gap into the cable around the drip loop and have your ground rod right around there - ground the mast to the same point, and ground your telephone, TV cable and AC to the same point.
The trick is to keep everything at the same potential, so whichever wire gets the charge, they all stay the same. (Even though all parts of a bird may be at 360kv above ground, they feel nothing.)
