I like the Austin Condor for all band use. Its big and ugly but works much better than a stock duck across the range you mentioned.

Base or portable? For portable I've had good luck with the telescopic whip that Radio Shack sells.

If you get a larger antenna that mounts on the radio, be aware that the extra stress may cause problems with the BNC. Keep the BNC tightened and if reception suddenly stops, a broken solder joint is the first thing to check.
