• To anyone looking to acquire commercial radio programming software:

Please do not make requests for copies of radio programming software which is sold (or was sold) by the manufacturer for any monetary value. All requests will be deleted and a forum infraction issued. Making a request such as this is attempting to engage in software piracy and this forum cannot be involved or associated with this activity. The same goes for any private transaction via Private Message. Even if you attempt to engage in this activity in PM's we will still enforce the forum rules. Your PM's are not private and the administration has the right to read them if there's a hint to criminal activity.

If you are having trouble legally obtaining software please state so. We do not want any hurt feelings when your vague post is mistaken for a free request. It is YOUR responsibility to properly word your request.

To obtain Motorola software see the Sticky in the Motorola forum.

The various other vendors often permit their dealers to sell the software online (i.e., Kenwood). Please use Google or some other search engine to find a dealer that sells the software. Typically each series or individual radio requires its own software package. Often the Kenwood software is less than $100 so don't be a cheapskate; just purchase it.

For M/A Com/Harris/GE, etc: there are two software packages that program all current and past radios. One package is for conventional programming and the other for trunked programming. The trunked package is in upwards of $2,500. The conventional package is more reasonable though is still several hundred dollars. The benefit is you do not need multiple versions for each radio (unlike Motorola).

This is a large and very visible forum. We cannot jeopardize the ability to provide the RadioReference services by allowing this activity to occur. Please respect this.

Anyone order a Wouxun recently?

Found this:

Only those radios that have been type-certified by the FCC for use in the GMRS may be used in this service. Most radios intended for use in the nearby Amateur Radio band (420-450 MHz) and some older (especially tube-type) commercial radios are not permissible to use. Otherwise, some UHF-FM radios currently type certified for Part 90 use in the 450-470 MHz band which do not exceed 50 watts transmitter output power, and which do not include capabilities not permissible for use in GMRS, are also type certified for use in the GMRS.

Source: GMRS Description

That might be older info. It seems there is a lot of "not-so-light" reading on the subject from a Bing search, with some coverage here at RR. If the above has any basis of fact it would appear that the Wouxun's are OK to use for GMRS as they have no "non-compliant" capabilities such as scrambling, encryption, digital operation, etc.

We could go on and on about this I suppose. It's an interesting sidebar to the fact that these are quite versatile little radios.

The Kenwood TK805D is certified for both Parts 90 and 95, even though it is digital capable (with an option board). It is better to check the regulatory status of your radio than to rely on some "rule of thumb" about available features to presume legality.

The Wouxun is Part 90 certified but not listed as being Part 95 certified. It's not legal to operate on MURS because it exceeds two watts of output which is understandable. It's puzzling that it would not be Part 95 certified as it seems to fall into the category of a radio that could be used without issue on GMRS. It's my understanding from the limited reading I've done on the topic that Part 90 is much more stringent than Part 95. I'm still in the early learning stages of this stuff. One thing I found out that I did not know is that I was apparently operating illegally on GMRS when I owned an XTS3000 and XTS2500 portable. Both of them had P25 capability, and despite my analog operation it was not legal because of that capability. Crazy stuff...must be the government! Oh wait...it is. It just seems silly if the Wouxun or a Motorola Maxtrac/Radius, etc. can't legally operate there...

Probably not Part 95 certified because Wouxun only paid for Part 90 certification.

I got the "2" model on Wednsday. Nice Solid little radio, I programmed it via software, only one little issue is that it seems to break squelch quite a bit even thou I have the squelch set up to 9. Am I missing a setting somewhere?

No. The squelch action is flakey on these radios. Also if you have a channel programmed for PL or DPL decode, scanning stops on the carrier (busy LED) instead of when the decode is detected and the squelch opens. That makes them useless for scanning if you need decode to prevent hanging on a constant carrier, noise, etc.

Friend of mine Terry dropped his Once and it stopped working properly, now it gets noise on all bands like it has no filtering. My other friend Bob has one and his charger died. These radios are less than a year old.My other freind had his LED's die on his within a few months.Another freind Kc2JLI got one and the audio was muffly ,he sent his back and his new one is ok so far.Heard a few muffly ones out on the air. After opening mine up,I saw it was kind of cheap I got rid of mine. Just wanted to give you a heads up .You get what you pay for!I love the Kenwood TH-F6 ,a bit more money but worth it..Anyways good luck with your purchase if you choose to get one.
