Lindsay & Gordon,
People around are starting to gripe about the changes that require a RR.com subscription before the archives can be accessed. In the past the subscription was not required. I guess most people's concern was the lack of notice about this change to everyone involved including the feed providers. A local NC Firefighting blog has brought this issue up. I stand by any decision that you make however do be aware I am starting to receive PMs and emails asking why people were not notified in advance of this change.
Thanks for all you do and I hope this comes across as helpful.

Marshall,

We made it clear in numerous communications that at some point the audio archives were going to become a premium subscription offering. The audio archives are the single most expensive component on the entire Web site. To rip, store, manage, and orchestrate archives of the audio, it takes quite a bit of storage, CPU, and servers to do so.

The feeds themselves will always remain free, but the ability to listen to past communications is a natural component to require a premium subscription.

I'm sorry people disagree with that.

Lindsay,
I appreciate the response :)
Believe me I understand the costs for storage and I noted as much on the blog that I linked to above and I do understand the need to make the archive a premium feature. The people that contacted me felt like they did not get advance notice of the changes. I guess I will try to help them keep a better eye on feature additions/changes.
Thanks again for the response and thanks for all the changes you are making to keep RR.com the one stop source for all monitoring data!

So what happens to people that provide audio feeds? It was stated that if you provided an audio feed that you would be upgraded to a premium subscription, am I misunderstood? I went to access a archived audio field and was unable to do so, but I do provide an audio feed. Any help would be appreciated.

Yes feed providers get Premium Subscription, you can verify that by going to your account page and it will say "Feed Provider-Premium".Im not sure why you are not able to access them. What does it say when you try and access it?

Yep, if you provide a feed then you are upgraded to a premium subscription. However, sometimes it doesn't happen - but not because somebody is out to give you a hard time :) Just email webmaster@radioreference.com and ask him [Lindsay] to take a look, and I'm sure that before ya know it you'll have your premium access. Of course, he'll probably read your post and take care of it before you email him. Just in case, send an email.

Oh I know people are not out to give me a hard time. I was just curious and was hoping to point out a possible problem with other feed providers. I'm sure Lindsay will take care of it.

I think making archives a premium only feature is great, I can't imagine how much storage one must have to keep all this archived audio, but I love the feature, it has come in handy more than once when needing to go back and retrieve information.

For those wanting the feature to NOT be premium only, I highly suggest you purchase a RR premium as the cost is similar to that of a large pizza delivered and is only paid twice a year. The benefits outway the cost tenfold IMO, and even if Feed Providers did not receive a free premium subscription I would gladly still pay it like I did before ScanAmerica became a part of RR.
