• To anyone looking to acquire commercial radio programming software:

Please do not make requests for copies of radio programming software which is sold (or was sold) by the manufacturer for any monetary value. All requests will be deleted and a forum infraction issued. Making a request such as this is attempting to engage in software piracy and this forum cannot be involved or associated with this activity. The same goes for any private transaction via Private Message. Even if you attempt to engage in this activity in PM's we will still enforce the forum rules. Your PM's are not private and the administration has the right to read them if there's a hint to criminal activity.

If you are having trouble legally obtaining software please state so. We do not want any hurt feelings when your vague post is mistaken for a free request. It is YOUR responsibility to properly word your request.

To obtain Motorola software see the Sticky in the Motorola forum.

The various other vendors often permit their dealers to sell the software online (i.e., Kenwood). Please use Google or some other search engine to find a dealer that sells the software. Typically each series or individual radio requires its own software package. Often the Kenwood software is less than $100 so don't be a cheapskate; just purchase it.

For M/A Com/Harris/GE, etc: there are two software packages that program all current and past radios. One package is for conventional programming and the other for trunked programming. The trunked package is in upwards of $2,500. The conventional package is more reasonable though is still several hundred dollars. The benefit is you do not need multiple versions for each radio (unlike Motorola).

Hello all, I own an XTS5000 and I’m casually getting some audio garbling if I move it around a lot (running etc), is this related to tuning or is reception a main issue since I am around 15 Kilometres away from the Repeater (P25 Conventional). Its not that big of a problem but any input would be helpful.

A little known problem of P25 (It affects analog as well but you would not notice), is if there is metal nearby making contact with other metal objects of the radio itself. Hanging a ring of keys on the antenna will distort both reception and transmission. Likewise wearing a suit of armor or big gold chain would be a bad thing. Another problem could be flexing of the radio and/or antenna themselves if there are loose bits in the radio like battery plate or shields.

Yep, those interconnect pins will also corrode over time and cause static/popping on analog and digital garble on P25. Sometimes cleaning the contacts on the RF board and VOCON will clear it up, but it may come back. These are, after all, two decade old radios and bound to start exhibiting age related problems.

It could just be reception at 15 km (9 mi), especially if there's stuff in the way, like terrain or buildings. Do you have another radio to compare it against? What frequency band?

Yeah im guessing reception, I’m using it indoors most of the time and my radio is 19 years or so old.

Age doesn't matter too much in the specs, FWIW. On UHF(R2), 5% BER spec for APX-NEXT is 0.178 µV while the XTS5000 is 0.200 µV, about 1 dB worse – generally insignificant compared to other variables, like the angle you hold the radio, the weather, what the signal is bouncing off of at any given moment, etc. Now if it hasn't seen a service bench in years, ...
