I bought this & its companion LS/PS. It worked fine until I began to notice that the unit had no audio after it was on for 30 or more minutes. Pressing Dial B would give clean audio for 10-15 minutes then it would get distorted, then nothing.

I am reluctant to send these both off to ICOM as I rewired the audio output connector, so that would void any warranty option on the LS/PS.

This seems to be a defective part that craps out when warm.

Anyone have a similar problem? And a solution?

Rewire the rig like it was new. Try a different power source.

Yes rewire. Test. If it still fails send it back. Depending on the rewire they may not even notice unless that is the cause of failure.

Rewire an SDR? This radio is all solid state boards. I have no interest in potentially destroying my 8600.

As far as power goes, it plugs into a wall 120 socket.

You said " I am reluctant to send these both off to ICOM as I rewired the audio output connector, "

Since you rewired it, can't you put it back to original? Sounds like you simply changed the output connection.

Have you tried running the receiver directly off a 12V DC supply?

I recall reading a review that the voltage of the companion PS may be at the upper end of the limit of the R8600 and cause it to run hot.

OK, you put it back to normal, it still doesn't work correctly, so send it back to the mothership! Maybe check the voltage output of the power supply first as mentioned above.

The same problem is still there after rewiring.

Have you gone back to basics? i.e. firstly make sure your R8600 is working as it should ... then add your additional devices to find out at what stage something is going wrong. As a way of a suggestion, could you record a video with your phone/camera of exactly what you're doing. Sometimes just writing responses is a shot in the dark to resolve something - whereas seeing exactly what you're doing can be of more help.

No, I'm going back to ICOM. These things cost twice what my first car (a 57 Triumph TR-3) did. It's out of warranty but don't have the means to fix this myself.

I spoke to their MI repair facility & they were very pleasant. Since they have a number of shops, I'd appreciate hearing reactions, locations & recommendations pro & con.

I was hoping that this problem had been encountered by others but not on this list or the io group.

The 8600 came back from ICOM's MI service center after 7 days. The problem was a thermal defect in the audio connector, which was replaced along with its cable. Matt the tech told me that this connector was used in other ICOM models. It works like new now. I'm surprised that this connector has not caused more problems with other ICOM models.

What is making the audio out port hot to cause a thermal defect?

You are talking about the external speaker jack on the rear of the 8600 correct?

The 8600 warms up after it gets turned on. This connector has a part that seems to stop working when the radio warms up. No more problem.

The audio cable from the SP terminates in the faulty jack. I had suspected the problem was in the audio circuitry.

Interesting.
Thanks for the info as I own two of these radios but have not had a similar issue as yours. At least not yet!
