AURORA – One lane of westbound I-70 is closed near Chambers while police investigate an crash which killed one person.
Graeme Nistler from Traffic.com says drivers should use westbound Smith Road or Colfax as an alternate. He then recommends taking I-225 north to get back on I-70.
Aurora Police Investigators say at about 3:15 Wednesday morning, a man and a woman were going west on I-70 inside a 1998 Mazda pickup. They drifted toward the median and then crossed several lanes of traffic trying to exit onto the I-225 ramp. The pickup hit a concrete barrier, spun around and rolled, according to Aurora Police.
Authorities say the woman passenger inside was taken to the hospital where she died. The man who was driving was also taken to the hospital. It's unknown if his injuries are life threatening.
Based on a statement from the driver, witness accounts and physical evidence, police believe alcohol was involved. Investigators found at least one bottle of liquor at the accident scene.
At this point, it's unclear how fast the pickup was traveling. Police say it will take several weeks to determine that. The accident must be reconstructed first.
Neither person who was inside the pickup has been identified. Police say they are in the process of opening westbound I-70 at Chambers. Two lanes have reopened, but one lane remains closed while crews repair the broken barrier.
