When you click on the link under the site name/number, there is generally an entry there that says 'Modulation Type'

That's where this information is located.

Austin/Travis Co is difficult to monitor

I have heard that the Austin/Travis County system is extremely difficult to monitor. One of the worst in the country. I'm no radio expert, but Have been told that their transmitters are out of sync so there is a lot of digital noise in there. Moving the radio can make the biggest difference.. I have been driving in the car and gotten little or no or garbled signal and then other times, it's perfect. I am using a Uniden BC296D and I have to constantly change the sound settings. Usually setting 533 works best most of the time.

I have done some side by side comparisons between the BC296D and the Pro96. Both sound about the same. There are advantages and disavantages of both. The biggest advantage for Austin is that the Pro96 has auto sound settings so that is a big big plus. I also heard a BC796D (Base) radio and it seems to do better than my handheld, possibly due to the better location of the antenna. I am very much looking forward to Radio Shack coming out with the base version of the Pro96.

That's good info but how will the "uninformed user" know that CQPSK systems are difficult to monitor? You would think they'd read the archives but we know how that goes.....

Oh well, that's okay. 8)

I *had* read the archives...in fact...that is where some of my bad information came from.

I went last night and bought the 800mhz antenna and that seems to make it a bit better...but still not as clear as Williamson County.

Williamson county is analog so audio quality isn't going to be comparable.

Try site 4 when you're up on the north side.

Can someone explain the sites? I have both simplex frequencies programed in to seperate banks. How/what do I need to do to listen to, say site 4 when I am north?

Is there an FAQ I missed about the Austin system?

Sorry for all the questions.

I am using a Uniden BC296D and I have to constantly change the sound settings. Usually setting 533 works best most of the time.

If the above is true, then leave it at 533 all the time. The sound setting would only need to be changed if the system manager decided to change some parameters regarding how the original audio is encoded.

Changing the audio quality setting will never compensate for reception issues. The fun I had in Austin seemed to be caused by a variety of phasing issues, adjascent channel interference issues (NEXTEL-type, although in this case it seems to have originated at a TV station), etc.
