If you are having trouble legally obtaining software please state so. We do not want any hurt feelings when your vague post is mistaken for a free request. It is YOUR responsibility to properly word your request.

To obtain Motorola software see the Sticky in the Motorola forum.

The various other vendors often permit their dealers to sell the software online (i.e., Kenwood). Please use Google or some other search engine to find a dealer that sells the software. Typically each series or individual radio requires its own software package. Often the Kenwood software is less than $100 so don't be a cheapskate; just purchase it.

For M/A Com/Harris/GE, etc: there are two software packages that program all current and past radios. One package is for conventional programming and the other for trunked programming. The trunked package is in upwards of $2,500. The conventional package is more reasonable though is still several hundred dollars. The benefit is you do not need multiple versions for each radio (unlike Motorola).

Hi, I've been curious about if a baofeng radio transmits during when it receives, does the transmission still go out? Also, I'm using a repeater, and the type of repeater says RM, should I put both input and output frequencies in? Or just output?

Thanks a lot.

you need BOTH the RX and TX in the radio for the repeater lol but you know you have a cheap radio who knows how its going to work.

So use the same frequency for both tx and rx?

All of the frequencies that radio is allowed to transmit on need an amateur license. If you have one, you should already know the answer to your question.

So, the same problem as last year?

No, the radio does not transmit while in receive.

Hopefully you are licensed to be able to use the repeater. Ham or otherwise.

Since it is a repeater, you would have to have both the TX and RX frequencies in to be able to access. Along with any CTCSS/DCS tones also.

Seems you just can't grasp the concept of how the radio works. Be more specific about the repeater and what license you hold. Much easier to help.

Ant888, just so you know. That radio is not legal to transmit on anything but amateur radio bands and it's not really good at that.. It's not legal for Family Radio (FRS) or General Mobile Radio Service (GMRS).

Don't worry about it. I'm not always thorough on the Internet. Sorry for that too. Apology accepted.

Best thing you can do is check out a few nearby radio clubs and try to find one that’s somewhat technical and not just old guys (no offense to them) socializing.

People are going to give you a hard time unless you pass the tech exam and get your FCC license. People on the radio won’t speak with you, since it’s against the rules. HamStudy.org is free on the website (app is a couple bucks). The effort needed to pass is minimal.

The ham community near you will have *some* decent electronics hackers, in the proper sense of the word, but they probably don’t spend much time with the repeater social crowd.

You may have better luck messing with the radios with the hacker conference crowd - BSides, Shmoocon, etc. - though please get licensed if you’re not already.

Thanks everyone for the answers. Let's stop talking about the situation between Mr. Zimmerman and myself. He seems to be a nice guy as I found out in my PM's. Let's all give him a break. Thanks and have a nice night everyone.

Now I understand what you are stating. Are you using the radio as a scanner? Or, are you transmitting on the radio?

Both frequencies are needed in that radio to transmit, but not to receive.

RM stands for Repeater and Mobiles.

The last thing any of us want to do is help someone transmit on a public service frequency. This is why all the questions about licensing.

Being forthcoming helps us understand who we are helping. Nothing more, nothing less.

In all that nonsense, did anyone actually answer the questions?

If the radio is receiving a signal, pressing the ptt button will still cause it to transmit. It will not receive while it is transmitting. You transmit on the repeaters input frequency, and receive on its output frequency.

Saying your callsign is required over the air, it's not required in an internet forum.

If a new ham doesn't know something, it's because the guy who does know something failed to tell the guy who doesn't.

This thread isn't one of those that makes me proud to be a ham.

Deleted a bunch of off-topic posts. Let's stick to answering the question that was asked.

The BCL (busy code lockout) option in the menu answers the first question. If it’s set to ON, you’ll get an error beep if you try to transmit when it’s receiving a signal.

I don’t know what RM means. Do you have a link I can look at where you’re seeing that?

You would want to use Chirp (easier than programming it manually) to program the repeater frequency, the offset (probably 600 off the main frequency), and the correct CTCSS tone, which tells the repeater to repeat what is sent. Or more safely, since I expect you’re unlicensed, don’t put the code in to ensure it won’t repeat your accidental traffic. You’ll still step on other peoples’ traffic regardless, so still be careful.

The Tech level license is pretty easy to get. 30-60 minutes per day for 5-10 days on HamStudy.org and you’ll likely be ready.
