The nationwide list of suggested base closings has been released. Nothing major for Maryland is included - although employees of even the few small entities will think it's major. There are three on the list for Maryland as follows:

Defense Finance and Accounting Service, Patuxent River
Navy Reserve Center, Adelphi
Pfc. Flair U.S. Army Reserve Center, Frederick

Virginia has only one -- Fort Moore. (Edit: Should read Fort "Monroe" per correction from poster below.)

[Edit] Andrews AFB has been announced as one base that will be seeing gains as units from other closed bases will be added there.

Looks like Ft. Meade is also scheduled to gain. 684 Military In, and 2915 Civilians In. They must be moving in something big...

The full list is here: http://www.defenselink.mil/brac/pdf/Appendix_C_FinalUpdated.pdf

Ft. Meade Commander's Statement on BRAC Announcements:
"Fort Meade is extremely excited about today's announcement concerning base realignment and closure. We are looking at the gain numbers that have been proposed for the installation. At present, we do not have specifics on what components will comprise the 682 military, 2,915 civilian, and 1764 contractors. In total, Fort Meade is projected to gain 5,361 people. We stand ready to support the Commission's recommendations that move forward for presidential and congressional approval later this year. We are confident that these recommendations will bring positive growth to the Fort Meade installation and surrounding communities of Anne Arundel, Howard, and Prince George's counties. During the months ahead, I commit my teams and directorates to keeping everyone fully informed of decisions that will impact Fort Meade and our neighbors. We are committed to maintaining a standard of excellence where quality of life for our service members and their families continues to improve. The consolidation operations at select bases is necessary for transforming the military into the force America needs in a changing world with new threats. I am confident that our leaders have made decisions that are right for our servicemembers and our nation."

Travis is not on the closings list.

Aberdeen is taking a huge military hit but that's offset by an even larger influx of civilian jobs.

The DSCC (Defense Supply Center of Columbus) could close, or have massive cuts. They are not sure yet.

"

Buried deep in the "detailed recommendations" it says

""This Recommendation consolidates headquarters components of DISA and JTF-GNO....at Fort Meade."

And

"This Recommendation creates a new Dod Media Activity by consolidating a number of military department media organizations.. It also collocates the American Forces Information Service(AFIS) with the new DoD Media Activity and the existing Defense Information School[at Ft Meade].

Doesn't look good to me guys....in Md, DC and Va alone close to 40,000 jobs realigned....meaning 30,000 - 35,000 civilians unemployed.....most civialians aren't going to be able to make the commute to their "realigned" assignments.....and on the military side....there is an awfull lot of families that are going to have to move as well. In several of the base closings, i noticed, the realigned jobs aren't even accounted for in neighboring states. And anyone who has ever tried to apply for a federal job knows how hard it is to obtain.....looks more like 100,000 lay offs to me.

Clarification: Fort Monroe, the old War of 1812 and Civil War installation in Hampton that is home of the Army's Training and Doctrine Command. The Continental Army Band is also based here.

If it does close, I hope either Dept on Interior of the Commonwealth takes it over as a historic site. It's the only fort that has a moat, and has several historical bldgs.

[edit]
It appears that Ft Monroe WILL be preserved if the Army moves out.

It looks good for Maryland, but bad for Virginia.. A lot of jobs seem to be coming to Meade and Bethesda... I can't believe Walter Reed is going to basically close and merge with Bethesda, but that's the plan.

[Edited to add]
Biggest Losers:
Leased Space in VA -22,925
Overseas -13,500
Sub Base New London -8,460
Walter Reed AMC -5,630
Ft Monmouth -5,272
Ft McPherson -4,131

Sorry Steve...the original news release showed it as Fort Moore. And I was sitting here thinking I've never heard of it. Thanks for the correction.

Cross Crab Ops off the frequency list. That's a shame. I heard there are other ANG units from the area hitting the road also but don't have specifics yet.

Thanks for that reference Glacier Clipper. It's a great read but long, very long, extremely long. Part Two is 398 pages in PDF format so be warned if you attempt to download it with a dialup connection. A very quick read though shows units from all over the country coming to Fort Meade and consolidation of some of the spread out units in this area currently in leased facilities moving onto the Fort. The Elkridge Landing NSA leased facilities are being given up and people moving to the Fort also.

I also noticed that all those leased buildings in Crystal City VA are being vacated and the units moved to Andrews. Of course, the whole program still has to be approved and won't begin until next year and continue over several years.

Looks like all the local major area Air Force bases did ok with this current plan.
Dover,Andrews,Mcguire all will get increases.
A shame about Martin State. Will miss those RAVEN A-10's along with Willow Grove PA. A-10's.They make up the bulk of daily Mil flights in this area.
Also Delaware ANG's 8 C-130's are headed out also.
Haven't seen any details on Aberdeen.
Funny how Pentagon depends much on Reserves for current Iraq duties etc yet will make it harder for average Joe to enlist in Reserves as bases get farther and fewer.
Cost savings no doubt but long term I would hate to be recruiter selling job that entails moving or much longer commutes.

I think that only the C-130s are leaving, The A-10s are staying and if I read correctly some "realigned" A-10s will move to Martin State.

{Edited} Yep, the document says three of the Willow Grove A-10s will go to Martin State...

Thanks! That's good news about Martin A-10's.

Looks like Atlantic City 177th fighters who hit this area from time to time will be upgrading F-16's to F-15A,B models probably some coming from closing Otis ANG base in Mass.

What? closing Teddy's base in Mass?

We shall see.....more politics to follow for sure.
