Hello,

I'm shortly going to buy either a bc296d or a bc796d, unless Uniden or someone else comes out with a better alternative for me in the next 30 days.

If they are identical in features, I'll take the bc296d and portability as an option. However, I don't want to sacrifice performance (sensitivity, rejection, absense of birdies, etc) to get portability, since I'll be in one place mostly.

What trade-offs and relavent experience with each have you found? There is only a negligable price difference and the feature sets published look very, very similar.

Thanks in advance

They are essentially the same radio, just one is portable and one is a mobile/base. I hate the Uniden battery packs, they take for ever to charge and don't last long enough. So for me, the 796 would be my choice (then again, I already have a PRO-96 for portable use.)

The one major differance between the BC296/796 is that the 796D has more scanning delay options,7 in total,1,2,4 Infinate -1,-5,-10.The BC296 has ON 2 second delay and OFF No delay. It would be user preferance if more delay options are needed.I chose the 796D for that reason.

I had to make the same decision a few months ago and went with the 796D and never looked back. It is installed in my vehicle and I sometimes bring it into the house and it works great in both places. My only complaint is that it is sometimes hard to hear in the car so I will be looking into an external speaker.

Thanks for the comments -- I'm leaning toward both ;-) Though a little more toward the 796.

I like the idea of portability, but worry about tradeoffs in performance, display, usability, when they package in the portable form.

I'll probably go 796....
