Ok, I am learning this new scanner as well as the ARC396 Programming software. I need to ask one other question.....

I have my local county (parish) law enforcement / public safety system programmed in the scanner. If I power the unit down and then power it back up, this system is quiet and recieves nothing. If I goto program system / sys settings / and toggle the ID Scan VS ID Search and then leave it on ID Search it works fine. Why does it not stay on ID Search. Why should I have to go and set that each time. What am I doing wrong?

Have you entered any talkgroups into that system? If so, it probably figures that's what you want to listen to.

You don't have to go to all that trouble to switch modes, though. Pressing the 'scan' button toggles between scan and search modes when nothing is being received.

Thanks Skip.

If I know the trunked frequencies, can this radio capture the Talk ID's for a given trunked system? Is that possible?

You don't have to go into program mode to change from ID SEARCH to ID SCAN. If you push the SCAN key while the 396 is running, it toggles between SEARCH and SCAN. Are you pushing the SCAN button when you first turn it on? That could be what's causing it.

OK, there is an oil refinery where I live that I really want to hear. I am pretty sure that they are using a trunked system. A radio technician told me that. How can I get the freqs? He was not willing to offer them up. The database's online all point to 4xx.xx mhz freqs and they don't pull nothing in.

I use Close Call to find unknown frequencies as well as my frequency counter. After you get a few hits you might be able to identify Control Channels.

Just a hint: When asking for help, give as much information as you can.

1) Where are you? State/County/City? (Amazingly enough, those of us halfway across the country DON'T know that Lower Podunk is in Upper Sequansie county!)

2) What exactly are you trying to hear? 'A refinery' doesn't help much... we don't live there, remember? <grin> We need the operating company name, address (yes, that can help, if you have it), whatever you can provide.

3) Close Call/Signal Stalker - This can help, but to use it, you will have to go camp out at the refinery fence. In these paranoid days, this can result in 'conferences' with security.

HAH! Found 'em! (Citgo licenses everything out of their home office, so nothing shows up in LA.)

Skip, where did you find those.....?

SKIP, after setting up a new system and plugging all the above freqs in under a Motorola Type II 800 Mhz sys, what I set up as group or groups. Right now, I have no groups in that system . Should I? I am scanning in ID Search mode.

I know ya'll think that I am really dumb, but this thing is a whole lot different than my old conv scanners. I am just learning this trunking and how to follow it.

By the way, thanks for the lookup.
