Well I am assuming the internal speaker does not work. It very well could be needing just a simple soldering job. Either way if I cannot find a local to help, glad to know I have gracious members here willing to do it. If Uniden no longer sells the speaker, then I fear having my radio thoroughly checked out and repaired for around Christmas time when I get $50 dollars to treat myself is coming to an end. Ugh life can be a pita at times.

My offer will stand, keep using an external speaker, and when you can get the speaker, and ship it, I'll do the work. It's really a simple repair when you come down to it. 12 screws, 3 solder joints...

I've been looking over the replies on this thread, and the one thing I have not noticed (among all the good advice) is DO NOT BUY AN EXTERNAL LAPEL SPEAKER !

Particularly the one at ScannerMaster that also has the sma connector for the rubber duckie antenna.

Uniden handhelds will not tolerate having the antenna & speaker commons shorted together. This greatly improves the volume and will burn up the front end of the radio. I almost did this to my 396T!

Check some other threads for this topic.

Enjoy the radio. I will not replace mine with the XT for al the features it added, mine is still a better radio! (although I did upgrade to the HP-1 as well)

Well damn,

I really need to get mine fixed then, because I can't use it without an external speaker and antenna now. Very glad you told me this, I wonder why they sell it if it's liable to be an issue. I want to love mine too, it's my first digital scanner.
