how do you keep the backlight on for the times I want to look at it? I hit the light key but it doesn't stay on long,I need to be able to leave it on then turn it off when I need to (a quick key for this?)

Menu > Settings > Set Backlight > Set Mode > Infinite

Correct... the hold the light to keep it on is a older model Uniden trick - or more like Radio Shack units.
