dont know if anyone else has noticed a problem that was fixed with the 1.11.03 upgrade , but im noticing increases in edacs beeps in hartford Ct. id say about every 10-15 responses on transmissions i get the edacs beeps , i noticed as far as p-25 trasnsmissions go , it sounds like a lot of the underwater sound is gone , but the motorboating seems more frequent even playing with the res / and ref gain. i have everything now set to the defaults of 0 on both and 8 auto. seems that has helped a little on the motor boating. paul , thanks for looking out for us , and keep the improvments coming.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

I don't see any major changes in monitoring Indiana SAFE-T. I still get some machine gunning but I need to monitor for a few more days to see if it is doing it less often.

The EDACS beeps are still there. The last firmware update did reduce, but not totally eliminate them. The 396 is letting them through, even though it is not following a Motorola digital transmission. IMHO this is something they should be able to fix, as the older scanners don't do it. That is the part I don't understand. Well, at least they are not quite as frequent.

The sound quality on SAFE-T is good, but the machine gunning is annoying.

sorry GTO_04 ......just read your post , but im glad im not the only one noticing the edacs beeps again.....

I posted this in the 996 section and will post here for those who aren't monitering both.

I'm running a 396 but the audio problems are the same. I'm getting blasted by conventional analog frequencys, along with inconsistent digital volume. Digital AGC set to OFF, analog set to ON.

I scan 3 digital systems and multiple conventional's.

System 1 being the PRWN, P25 only - http://www.radioreference.com/modules.php?name=RR&sid=2508.
System 2 is the Glendale public safety, P25 only - http://www.radioreference.com/modules.php?name=RR&sid=798.
System 3 is the Maricopa county, type 2 3600 P25/analog - http://www.radioreference.com/modules.php?name=RR&sid=848.
System 4 is Multiple conventional frequencys.

For referance, if i set the volume level to the main system this is what happens;

System 1: volume level set to this system -- level 7. (No change.)
System 2: volume sounds about 2 'levels' lower then system 1 (before update, it was 1 level lower.)
System 3: volume fluctuates so bad from lower volume then system 2, to louder then system 1. (No change from any of the updates, huge machine gunning at the beginning, occasionnally gets stuck on a control channel and volume fluctuations continue)
System 4 (Volume is fairly consistent between all the analog groups, but varies greatly from the digital systems, This is using Analog AGC. Res time -3, ref gain -2, range 9. Before the update the Gain was +1.)

I have tried all the audio agc tweeks-- The problem is sys1, and sys2 already use it, and when digital agc is on, they sound underwater. While system 3 benifits from them, it does no good to have it on for the other 2 systems. The error rate on all of the systems have been optimally adjusted also.

--Improve P25 audio performance in the Auto Threshold mode.
--Improve digital audio performance with AGC when the person transmitting suddenly speaks loudly

So digital P25 got lower in volume, while analog volume got higher.
The two audio updates have really made things worse.

Just my take on it.

Well maybe they'll be able to give the EDACS issue a further tweak so the beeps go away. I'll have to try the default settings to see if the motorboating decreases. Right now I would say it is slightly more frequent with the newer firmware.

Digital audio is good. But it was good with the last firmware update too.

Download the old version and install it the same way you did the new version.

I want to load this new firmware but I am hesitant because if I want to go back I can't because Uniden removed the previous version from their website.

Anyone know where 1.11.03 can be downloaded from?

I have a feeling that we will see new radios before we see rebanding.
APCO25 monitoring slightly better here in LA. The LAPD is an APCO 25 non trunked system. New firmware seems to have had no negative effects on monitoring the LAOD system.
I had to change the squelch slightly.

That's interesting about the machine gunning, someone else mentioned that it was less machine gunning (on the 996) and suggested changing the talkgroups to digital only, a feature not available on the 396, I might add, but on my "wish list" for 396 future updates once the rebanding changes have hit the fan.

As for the EDACS, aren't you at the fringe (30+ miles) of the Howard Co. system? This could be the cause of the extra beeps.

A far cry from your first post about this. I was wondering about LA. Thanks. How about the City of Los Angeles TRS and the County of Los Angeles TRS?

Question for UPNMan -- maybe this is obvious or has been asked/answered already...

Since the user's manuals are online, are they being maintained/updated as new firmware changes (and therefore features/functions) are released???

I don't monitor the LA city and county trunked systems much. But I did turn them on and give a listen this morning for a couple of hours. The upshot is that I can hear both systems fine (they are not ultra strong hear near LAX) I have the county system broken into 3 separate chunks due to the 200 TGID limit.
What I don't hear are the EDACS burps and beeps. Monitoring these systems sounds very clean.

The LAPD system continues to sound good

EDACS beeps are much more common for me with the latest firmware. And it's not low signal strength as I'm only 5 miles from the tower on flat land!

I don't know why a later firmware upgrade would undo a benefit of a previous one. That's not supposed to happen.

Planning on prchasing the BCD396T??????????????

Well to start off I want to say hello to everyone! This is my first post and I'm sure wont be the last, after reading all the threads concerning the 396t and all the issues that seem to be tagging along with it, should I hold off on getting one? I currently own the bct15 and love it. I have been in this hobby for years and really enjoy it. Any help is greatly appreciated.
For the most part it seems the majority of peope here like the scanner with the exception of a few flaws.

I'd still get one. at least with the 396T, you can get it, see what version of firmware it has. if you are OK with the newer one then leave it alone. if you have issues with it, then get an older version (I have 2 versions back) and try that version. both the 396 and 996 are great scanners despite the new firmware issues.

What to do?

So, my 396 has firmware 1.11.04....based on all the entries on this thread, do I assume correctly that it's best to leave it as it is and not try the "upgrade?" Does this "upgrade" work better on 3600 mixed mode, or 9600 P25?
