I'm replying to my own message to let you all know a strange quirk that's going to be a problem for me. I set the Wi-Fi dongle up correctly, then turned the scanner off and back on the next morning. Unknown to me, the scanner didn't reconnect to my internal network, and I found out why. And this is the annoying part. When I was able to check out the Wi-Fi setup info on the scanner, it showed the type of Wi-Fi had changed from infrastructure to access point mode (AP showing on the status screen). Why that happened, I haven't a clue. Why I couldn't check it immediately upon having trouble getting the thing to reconnect is because I'm totally blind and have to rely on others to do stuff like read LCD screens for me, and thos who can (and will) are hard to come by sometimes. However, after that got worked out, everything--VLC, the remote control software, everything--started working great! Now I have to figure out how to make the rc software a little more screenreader-useable, and then I want to figure out how to change the output audio interface in VLC to pipe the thing through one of my mixer channels via the Firewire interface. Still wondering whether the dongle setup will revert to access point mode again if I turn the radio off.
