Looking for some insight on a new scanner. I have had a radio shack pro 106 forever and decided to upgrade. I recently purchased the BCD536HP. I monitor state patrol and local law enforcement in Grand County Colorado. The BCD536HP seems to miss the first part of the transmission. Dispatch comes thru and then nothing from the other end. At other times the car calling comes through but nothing from dispatch. I have programmed favorites and also tried to let the scanner do its own thing with location. I m still missing parts of the transmission. Any help would be wonderful. Thanks

Possible a simulcast system. How many seconds do you have set for Hold Time? If 0 try 1 see what happens.

Default hold time are something like 1,5 sec so 1,0 will shorten the time. Hold time are used when the scanning comes to a system and there's no activity there and waits for the hold time for someone to start a conversation. Delay time for a TG sets the time that the scanner waits for someone to respond to a conversation. If the delay is too short it will continue to scan other sites or systems and it could take a whole scan cycle until you are hearing that conversation again.

I would recommend to move your local systems to a favorite list and then change the delay for a TG to 5 sec and then copy the time and paste to all other TG's by clicking the first and last TG's delay while holding down shift and then paste.

Could be the delay time as mentioned. If it is a larger system and you are scanning other larger systems at the time, once the scanner moves on to the other systems it can take a while to return.

It could also be something as simple as human error on their part. It takes a second or two for a repeater system to pick up the mic output and repeat it. If talkers press the PTT (push to talk) button and immediately start talking then the first second or two of their transmission can get cut off. The entire transmission can get cut off if it was very short, like "10-4" only.

Another issue might be with how you scan. If set up to scan only selected IDs then the non-selected IDs won't be scanned. That is good if you purposely want to not scan certain IDs due to lack of interest in them. If set up to scan/search for any ID then you will get everything on that system, a lot of which might not be of interest to you.

And of course it could be the way they set up their system. Some system have issues and even they cannot hear each other consistently! We have a few of those in the DFW area, especially on the P25 systems. I hear a lot of them asking for a repeat or just saying I heard only garbled noise. And as someone else mentioned, the simulcast systems can be notoriously riddled with issues.

For a trunked system, going to 1 second won't shorten the dwell time. It takes about 1.5 seconds to receive a complete cycle of data from the control channel. The scanner will always check at least one full cycle, so if it takes longer than 1 second, but the scanner is set to 1 second, it will still take as long as it takes (longer than 1 second).

Awesome thanks for the info. I guess I am just used to the pro 106 and scanners at work picking up entire transmissions. I will do my research and tweak a few things. Hope to get this dialed in. Scanner is to quiet for what I am used to with my pro 106 and the same departments.
