I just got my new BCT15 and have a few questions.

First, is there anything I should know before using the scanner that would make it easier to use or that would keep me from doing something wrong and messing up the scanner? I have download the BCTool software and have pretty much got everything I need. Just wanted some tips or advice before I hooked it up to transfer the programming.

Second, do you have to assign system quick keys or can you leave them set to "None" so that everything comes on no matter what?

Any advice would be appreciated.

I wouldn't worry too much about making mistakes with programming. Do one system at a time so you can concentrate on making each one work before you move on to the next. If it ends up so messed up that it doesn't work, just delete the system and start over.

If you do not assign any quick keys it will scan everything that is programmed in, unless you go to each system's settings and lock it out.

What are system keys?

A system quick key is just a number (1-99) that you assign to a particular system. Then within that system, you can assign group quick keys (0-9).

For instance, you could assign the County of Toronto to system quick key 1. Then as you create groups within that system (for instance Fire, EMS, and Police) you could assign each of those groups a quick key. So Toronto Fire would be 1-1, Toronto EMS would be 1-2, and Toronto Police would be 1-3. You can consult the manual for info on how to enter the quick keys.

The point of the system quick keys of course is to allow you to quickly select or deselect a system simply by pressing the corresponding number on the keypad. The point of group quick keys is to allow you to quickly select or deselect groups within a given system.
