Police code lists are all over the web, but they all seem to have codes other's don't have, or they have different meanings for codes.. I compiled a big list of police codes and if there is more than on meaning for the code, I left both codes in the list. I figure it's better to let the scanner listener figure out the right code meaning based on context. Here is a link to the list... (there is also a pdf to download). This is mostly meant to help the newbies.

While it is a nice listing, not all departments use the same codes. My local law enforcement codes don't match your listing totally and my state police use different codes than my local law enforcement.
It is a nice start for someone new, but they might be even more confused if they think the police or fire department are saying one thing but are actually saying something else.

Again, it is a nice listing. Thanks.

Nice Job

Thanks for taking the time and effort to provide this list.
Always nice to have another resource.
It beats most of the other lists I've been able to find.
Anyone else find a decent police codes list?

In addition, the vast majority of your "100" codes apply only to California since they are actually California penal code, vehicle code, and health & welfare code sections. The best thing to do is post all the codes you know for your won state to your state database administrator and have toher do the same for their states. While I know you have good intentions, your list will confuse far more people than it will help.

There are many of them in the database with the counties that they pertain too. When you pull up a county listing, there are tabs at the top, one of which says 'Files'. This is where you will find them for that county, if one has been uploaded.

Also most of the County's Sheriff office will give you a list of the 10 codes it just a matter of going to the Sheriff office or calling , (Most . not all )
It's the depisition codes and regular codes they will not give out for there protection but like I said most will let you have there 10 codes just ask for them all they can say is NO (and the best thing to do to get them is go talk to the Sheriff him self in person he doesn't bit :D ) and when you get them Enter them into the data base here , thats what I did for Kershaw County SC and as far as the other codes the won't give you , listen to the conversation 90% of the time you will know what they are talking about :)

Some areas don't even use codes at all now. With the exception of one here or there (by accident) you don't hear codes at all in my area (by any dept), well except the rare instance they use one of the Virginia "signal codes", in which case there are only 4 of them.

I agree with Jim, the database is the best place for them so as it doesnt cause confusion on where the codes belong. Some Counties and cities have them in the database others dont. It would be a great asset to have them in a place where if you were new to the area, or passing thru you could have it all in one place. BTW you do have quite and extensive list nice job............. Thanks for the list but you have chosen a pretty difficult task t assemble a univeral list.

Don't forget the 9-code used in parts of California and the 12-code used by Oregon State Police.
Some agencies in the midwest & southern states were using 'J' Codes supplementing thier 10- codes.

Agreed, 100 codes in your list are California only.

One mans 14601 is anothers DWLS 2nd... one mans 11-95 is another mans 976 is anothers 11-86 and yet anothers 'traffic'........

I always wanted to know the codes. I talked to one of the cops...he didn't have a copy of them handy. He told me to check the internet. I did (many sites). I showed him one of them and he said, "Wow. These are very different than what we use.". I agreed with him because a simple code like 10-10 was way different.

There are as many different lists of 10 codes as there are stars in the sky. I have seen numerous lists of so called "standard" 10 codes that had variations from one list to another.

Bottom line: The 10 codes vary one one department to another. Even when many of the codes in different lists are the same, others have differences, especially the "higher" numbered codes.

In Maine most if not all 10 codes are the same. So if an officer in Fort Kent is in Kittery he knows what the Kittery officer is saying and vis a versa. Here in South Carolina the towns all are different as is each County as well as Highway Patrol and is very confusing for all
