i am looking to see if you are allowed to bring portable radios on the block island ferry?? looking to see about the frequencies for the crew and the captain talking

Traditional Ferry: You can bring as much luggage as you would like aboard the Traditional Ferry. Storage is available for personal items such as luggage, beach bags, coolers, and beach chairs on the lower deck of the ferry as soon as you board. Wheelbarrows are available for you to load your items onto the boat. If you have more than a couple of items, we recommend that you rent a personal pallet from the Freight Office upon arrival. They are available on a first come first serve basis, so it is recommended you arrive at least 45min-1hour prior to sailing. Pallets measure approximately 4’x4’x2’ and cost $10.50. Pallets are transported on the Traditional ferry only and must be accompanied by the individual who rented them.

A while ago when I took the ferry the crew members had portables on a vhf marine channel for general chat.

Ok on them using VHF Marine for onboard communications.

Going forward they can't use VHF Marine for this. This radio service is for vessel to vessel or vessel to shore. Most commerical vessels use UHF for onboard communications.

same here when i went on the ferry the crew had icom radios on there waist

Many Ferry/Cruise etc use VHF Marine for on-board Ops.
Yes they have access/allowed UHF, but that means a second radio, easier [especially the smaller vessel/ops] to use VHF Marine channels.
