It's been a LONG time since I've heard this many accidents in such a short time period. It started between 1:00 and 2:00 PM. I just beat the storm home, the roads were getting a little slick as I pulled up the driveway. Hamilton County roads are a mess to say the least!

It's only been a week since the last ice storms so it couldn't have been that long, it was just as bad then. This is natures way of trying to thin the gene pool of idiot drivers.......

And as I wrote the above about the gene pool my neighbor missed his driveway.... he's a moron so it figures (he's affraid of my dogs, one the neighbor kids on the other side of his house play with and he and his GF keep calling the cops on the dogs who are in a 30x20 pen thats 6 feet tall).

Then almost simultaneously down the road one of the county salt trucks is "stuck" unable to move at all and blocking the road. Said on the radio when he "dumps" the clutch he just spins....... I could think of two problems he's having, besides not being too smart.

The county is working like 6 or 7 wrecks at the moment. Oh the county driver just now said he'd throw some salt around his wheels and see if that helps..... must have read my mind!

Seemed busier today though with more wrecks in a shorter time period, but yes it was bad a week ago also. 7 fatalities last Tuesday at least 2 so far today.

I think the problem today is twofold
1: bigger area
2: the slush is fooling the drivers

I was just out and had no problems getting around, but some brainiac thought he'ed pass me doing 50 (at least) and went slidding down the road...... he got a nice Christmas present from the officer and a tow truck driver.

ISP 52 just now released the afternoon road officers at 2:49am. District 51 is still trying to get traffic moving on I69. DOT 32 just announced Madison Co EMA has ordered I69 closed from Ind 13 up to Muncie so road crews can clear the interstate as soon as ISP 51 gets the trucks out of the way that have the highway completely blocked.

Do you know if this meant that the SAFE-T system was overloaded, or just that the dispatchers were overloaded (i.e. technical or human problem)?

David

ISP 52 and whomever TG 48XXX are says hold all but emergency traffic system overload. Real time.

Safe-T was operating with demand greater than capacity in Hendricks CO. The system was throwing 'Bonks' left and right from about 2:00 through about 7:00 PM last evening. This is because there were no available channels to assign to the requested TG.

It is not hard to see why. There are a total of 8 RF (voice) channels plus the control channel available in the Hendricks Co sites. Police dispatch was split. PPD and eventually Brownsburg were on OP4. The rest on main dispatch. That is 2.

Fire disp, EMS, Fire TG were nearly non stop as well. That is now a total of 5.

ISP 53 and 52 were very busy. Mutual Aid talk groups were active as well.

Add county DPW, INDOT, and other TGs affiliated from near by counties. Then there is the fire admin, Police car to car, Fire OPs assignments, Police HQ, and More.

It is not hard to see that very quickly the number of active talk groups is above the available number of RF channels.

Point of interest: The NEXTEL sites in the Plainfield / Avon areas were above capacity as well. Certainly some of that loading was public safety users displaced by Safe-T rejects. Of course, general subscribers contributed as well.

The units that still have their old radios were keeping the old VHF channels alive also. This was especially true for car to car and logistics.

Commentary: We have seen it time and again in Indiana. Safe-T is under sized for a major event. Folks, this was just a little ice at rush hour. We had days of notice. Too many departments have all of their eggs in the same basket.

According to WISH-TV, I-69 was closed for about six hours and they didn't have it cleared up until this morning. It is amazing that there were not more fatalities. The salt trucks were getting stuck also.

I-69 was also closed at 116th Street for awhile last night as ISP asked Fishers PD for help in shutting down the interstate.

Out West on 70 they had two INDOT trucks that rolled over as well, that put INDOT down two more trucks in addition to those that were stuck.

Another freezing rain disaster this morning with a double fatality on SR37 at 216th St. north of Noblesville. Then there was another serious accident a mile south of there. SR38 west of Noblesville was virtually impassible. This one caught a lot of drivers by surprise, including INDOT.

The pavement temperatures were reported at 34 degrees yet a lot of ice on the roads!

This one was very strange, almost like there was a line of colder air north of the the Hancock/Hamilton co line, no ice in Hancock co but there was in Hamilton co. And in the midst of one of the heavy downpours my dog gave me a Christmas present..... 5 puppies....... just what I needed.

Congratulations on the Christmas present! You are going to be very, very busy to say the least!

There did seem to be a sharp cutoff line with the freezing rain. I'm in Noblesville and my driveway never did freeze. It has water lines running underneath it and the snow melts there more quickly than other places.

Was that Ambulance 61 from Boone County? Ambulance 61 from Hamilton County would be from Sheridan, and that's a long ways off! Like you say welcome to Indiana winter weather. I suppose the next thing will be a few thunderstorms and tornadoes. We've had just about everything else!

That was from Hamilton County and yes Carmel ran out of help from all over and was in deep trouble that day but did manage to get it all taken care of but big delays in getting help to people. First time I ever heard that from Carmel.
