Hello. I recently purchased a BCD396T scanner for the new Burlco trunked system & have it programmed. I am using the Uniden software from their website for programming. I have a few questions that hopefully someone with better knowledge of the system than I will have the answers to:

#1. I have the correct fire tone out A & B tones programmed with 154.220 as the monitoring frequency for my station. I followed all directions in the owners manual. My station has had at least 2 calls since the tones were programmed. The scanner has not activated like a pager would. I have had the scanner both in scan & on hold on 154.220 which is programmed in as a conventional channel & the scanner has not activated. I have had the channel on hold prior to the tones activating so that the channel & scanner would not miss them. Any suggestions?

#2. I have each section of the county programmed in a different system in the scanner (8 trunked systems & 1 conventional system). I have all 9 systems scanning as #'s 1 thru 9 are showing on the LED of the scanner. When sitting in my house (Burlington Twp.), the scanner scans systems 1, 2 & 3 for longer periods of time than system 5. The scanner jumps over systems 4, 6, 7, & 8. When there should be radio traffic on systems 4,6,7 & 8, I manually switch to the appropriate talkgroup ID. When holding on that ID, "Finding Control Channel" appears on the LED of the scanner & nothing is heard. On Thanksgiving night, I took the scanner with me while visiting relatives in Berlin, Camden County. While in Berlin, systems 3, & 5 were scanning for longer periods of time than the others while jumping over some systems as well. While in Berlin, I was manually holding on a talkgroup ID in system 1, "Finding Control Channel" appeared, which does not occur when inside of my residence. Is this a reception problem & will I be able to sit in by Burlington Twp. home & hear Bass River as if they were right next to me? (I can't hear the other end of the county, but I can hear State Police cars in Bridgeton!!)

#3. What does "Finding Control Channel" mean & what are Control Channels?

#4. When the scanner is scanning normally & in ID Search mode, when activity is picked up, the ID numbers appear. However sometimes for example, the ID numbers for a talkgroup that is programmed in system 5 shows up & can be heard in system 3, which it is not programmed in.

#5. The Burlco system is a 500 Mhz system. I see Ebay for example has companies selling 800 Mhz high-gain antennas for better reception. Will the 800 Mhz antenna work on my scanner with the 500 Mhz system?

Any assistance for the above topics will be appreciated as myself & others that have recently purchased the same scanners all have just about the same questions. Thank you.

1. fire tone out is not my expertise, but you have to be in firetone standby mode for this to work.(can someone clear this up, for me too)
2. if it jumps over a system (that is trunked) that means it's not finding a control channel, because of reception issues (most likely). Since you moved locations, you were able to get a signal for the other systems and the scanner found the control channel.
3. (over simplyfing here) trunked systems are controlled by computers, and ech system may have 1 or more control channels, which tell the radio system what to do. your scanner knows to look for this particular frequency (provided that you program it in). the scanner does not care about the other non-control channel frequencies. if it can't find a CC (control channel) it goes to the next system.
4. when in ID Search, the scanner will pickup ANY TGID that is active, programmed or not, doesn't matter what system or group you're in.
5. 500mhz is not 800, so the 800mzh antenna will NOT help. you need an antenna that is tuned for 500mhz band. remember, an antenna that is tuned to a specific band like 500, you willl sacrifice reception on other bands, NO there is no way around this, thats just the dynamics of antennas.

PM me for further details.

Not much to clear up - you put it pretty succinctly. There's a mode for scanning and there's a mode for fire tone-out monitoring - you can't do both at once.
