Buying a Sds200

I'm planning on getting a sds200 when they are available again and I'm thinking about a ups battery backup for when the power goes out was wondering what size of ups I would need.

A SDS200 doesn't draw all that much power, less than 10 watts. The idle power consumption of most UPS units is more than that.

You can also use the 12v connection on the 200 (Instead of the AC wall adapter) with a 12v battery and a small charger/maintainer...

The AC adapter supplied with the SDS200 is 750 ma (0.75 amps). To power the scanner 24 hours would require a battery rated approximately 18 ampere hours.

Make sure to get the proper charger for your battery type. I use a "Battery Tender Plus"

I ran a 536 on a sealed lead-acid alarm battery for days on a single charge. These are commonly available at Amazon, Batteries Plus and other suppliers.

There are outfits that sell these with nylon pouches, a cigar lighter plug and charger. I had one of these before I moved and it too ran the 536 for days. The current draw of an SDS200 is probably a little higher but still should work fine with one of these.

The problem with using a UPS is that it is much less efficient as it has to convert the 12VDC to 120 AC and then you convert it back down to 12VDC with the AC adapter. It would last a lot longer if you removed the sealed L-A battery and rad the radio directly on that. In addition my UPS's have an annoying beep when on battery power, I suppose there is a way to disable that though.

I used to stick a piece of electrical tape over the opening on the beeper component, or a small dab of silicon rubber in it. You could still hear it which I wanted to do, but it was no longer annoying.

I cast my vote for the Tripp Lite 1500 which serves me well during power outtages. I have 2 of them, one for my desktop computer and 2 scanners and one for my 2m/dmr and MFJ power supply. For continuous power I have a Honda EU3000iS that I bought for the RV that pulls double duty at home if and when I need it. I was in the beginning stages of acquiring what I needed to build a permanent solar power system for my shack when covid derailed me last year and I was forced to put it on a shelf until later. The plan is still a go when I am up to it.
