Does the website say anything about scanners not being allowed? I remember that went I went to the Travis show with my radio, they weren't going to let me in. I convinced them though.

I talked to somebody who is a major part of the security at the Air Show, he stated that there is nothing at this point that says scanners are not allowed.

I'll be rolling back into town with a hangover, from the Bay Area. Should be coming back on Saturday at some point (took the day off), so I'll be down for meeting some of the guys. I'm not big into looking like a geek in public, so I won't be carrying more than 1 scanner (discreetly tucked away), if any at all. Just not my thing.

Anyways, if someone picks a spot, whether at the event, or maybe some food first then head over. I live about 1/4 mile from the west side of the base, so I can meet anywhere in the area.

According to the show website, there is still no schedule.

I think it runs from 10-4pm..... I think

I know I'll be hooking up with a co-worker and spending all day there. Well, at least till after the Blue Angels perform. I'll be armed with my 396T and my friend will have Pro-97.

I'll most likely have my digital camera and digital 8 in hand more than my scanner & earphones.

The California Capital Air Show will be held on March 18th and 19th, 2006. The gates open at 10:00am and the show will end around 4:00pm

We have a list of performers but not a schedule. The schedule is not determeined until shortly before show time due to safety, weather, and operational requirements.

I will be at the Airshow on Sunday.

I am employed by Metro Fire and am in a leadership position with Metro Fire's Community Emergency Response Team (C.E.R.T) and we will have a booth out there on both days. The Metro Fire CERT's are also in the works establishing a Amateur Radio Team.

So come on by and say hello.

As an EMT, I am also a member of the Sacramento Regional Medical Reserve Corp., assigned under the Sheriff's Department Special Operations Division, but I am not sure the MRC will be there. I will find out at the next meeting. If we do have a booth, I also invite you to visit the MRC as well.

We are a great group of people from various backgrounds, active and retired - Military, Law Enforcement, Fire service, Emergency Medical Services and other professions not in the field, but freely give their time to support to our community and the public safety field.

Anyone know if the $2 convenience fee is per ticket, or per purchase? If I bought 3 or 4 tickets, would it still be $2 per ticket, or $2 for the whole thing?

It's per ticket :(

Probably better to stop by a Heritage CU and pick some up.

That's dumb. I was so happy to see DMV get rid of their convenience charge...always makes me wonder whose convenience it really is! Anyways, thanks for the info. Guess I'll just get a ticket and stop in...If anyone has a good 940 spot/time, post it up.

Yep, 20% is surely not my convenience. Bill, is a 940 the same as 11-98? My SSD reception still sucks!

940 = get together/meet up. Hardly listen to anyone on 10/11 codes.

What about the park you mentioned in an earlier post?? My only concern about that park is that it is probably gonna be closed since it is in such close proximity to flight ops for the air show. Bill, can you or one of your colleagues confirm whether or not this will be open to the public during the show??? If so, that would be a good place to meet.

I was told they'll be charging $5 per car (which can be easily dealt with), so my boss obviously thinks it'll be open. If the Navy is planning on closing those areas, they're not doing a good job letting people know (which tells me it'll probably not be a problem). It's at Eagle's Nest and Douglas (just south of the Tracon Center).

Might be a good spot, unless people would rather just meet somewhere inside the event. If people aren't going to the event, and just want to scan from nearby, then it would probably work just fine.

I would like to meet "inside" the event.

Ideally, i'd like to set up a "basecamp" monitoring post near show center. Then we could take turns holding the fort while others explored.

Well, if weather permits, I'll more than likely be @ the park on Sat. Hope to have a bit of a BBQ: hamburgers, steaks, and smoked pulled pork YUM!!

Sunday, will be show day. I hafta agree with RolnCode3 and peruse the show with a discreet scanner with the proper freqs. plugged in.

Whether we meets up or not, I hope everyone in attendance enjoys the show!!!!! (should be fun!!!)

Practice show is closed, suggestions for alternates?

http://www.californiacapitalairshow.com/pilotnotice.html
Called and asked if they'd open up for practice show. Dude on phone said no. I'm still going to try to go, but assuming they don't let me in, what are good alternate viewing locations?

Here is an overview of the field:
http://maps.google.com/maps?f=q&hl=en&q=mather+afb&ll=38.549114,-121.277304&spn=0.062561,0.171661

I'm guessing that the best viewing is going to be on the side opposite the ramp, on the 'sothwest'.

Here's a closer look:
http://maps.google.com/maps?f=q&hl=en&q=mather+afb&ll=38.549114,-121.277304&spn=0.01564,0.042915

So either Aubergine Way or Park Road.

Looking at a satellite view:
http://maps.google.com/maps?f=q&hl=....559408,-121.294856&spn=0.015638,0.042915&t=k

There is a concrete ramp (which was presumably where B-52's and other heavies were hangered) and a blacktop ramp. I'm guessing (as I type) that concrete is where the cargo terminal is, and the blacktop is where the general aviation is. So presumably, the show center will be closer to the NW corner of the field.

Comments? (Besides I'm totally out of control here...:) )

Park Rd. is not open to the public (AFAIK...there should be signs saying "Authorized Vehicles Only"). Aubergine might get a call to the SO about a suspicious subject hanging out...just a guess. It's all homes along Aubergine (I believe).

You can park at the corner of Douglas / Mather. Just park off the shoulder and make sure there aren't any "no parking" signs. You won't be under the flight line so you probably won't get messed with.

I'm betting you'll want to be on the east or south sides of the runways, as everything north and west is populated heavily, and unlikely to be the show flight path.

Those B-52 spots on the southwest are where the Sacramento Regional Driver Training Facility is. Not open to the public. It's off Alert Rd. www.srdtf.com

Yeah, I know the difference, but wasn't clear in the message. The pattern you refer to is known as a 'Christmas Tree':
http://www.globalsecurity.org/wmd/facility/bomber_alert.htm

In the latter half of 1957, SAC changed plans for the alert apron to a herringbone onfiguration -— one where not only was the alert taxiway at 45 degrees, but also the individual aircraft stubs. SAC credited its shift to an analysis of ADC alert aprons, also taking the name from ADC: “Christmas trees.” ADC alert aprons were in fact less well defined that what the SAC alert aprons would shortly become. Yet, parking alert aircraft at 45 degree angles was the essence of both alerts. The name Christmas tree stuck for the final SAC configuration, although herringbone was often used in the early written descriptions.

On the Northwest side looks like where they actually hangered the heavies...

D'oh. The B-52 ramps are the southeast, not west (along Mather Blvd. near Douglas Rd.)

Northwest is all general aviation and cargo...lots of Gulfstreams and Citation type aircraft, in addition to FedEx, UPS, etc... Superfortress Ave. is where a lot of the hangars are. The Sheriff and PD helos are over off of Missile Way on the far west end of the field.
