The ESN and SUM are two different numbers.

Retrieve the ESN and SUM codes from the scanner by pressing Menu>Settings>See Scanner Information>Firmware Version. Copy them EXACTLY. BOTH codes are required. Double triple check to make sure both codes are correct.

Also the SUM Code is the 3 digit code after the dash on the ESN screen. For an SDS100 it will look like "SN:38326088001234-1A4". The ESN is the numbers before the dash and the SUM code is the 3 characters after the dash. The dash is not part of either code.

The SUM code can include the numerals 0 thru 9 and letters A thru F. This is used to make sure that the ESN is correct, a typo in either will result in a failed code message.

I've done these upgrades on several occasions on numerous scanners without problems but the process seems to be more cumbersome than necessary.

So just tried to upgrade my SDS100 to nxdn etc. on my.uniden.com account. During registration, SN was prompted for, ESN was not. The registered product displays SN only. ESN and Checksum fields are blank. Options for each modulation protocol are presented below with links "ESD required". Clicking on any prompts with entry fields for ESN and checksum. Having located these in the device settings, the ESN field only accomodates the first eleven of fourteen digits and cuts off the last three. The three character hexadecimal checksum is correctly entered. As above, the website tells me to go back because the checksum is bad. I believe my.uniden.com is calculating the compare checksum from the eleven digit cut off SN and is therefore obviously wrong. Replacing 260 charactets with Z still leaves one ESN character cut off. Why is Uniden limiting the length off the serial number, preventing this upgrade from succeeding? When I click on the customer support link, browser saysbit cannot find the server. Very frustrating experience.

Unless you've accidentally inserted some blanks into the field, the ESN (minus the SN prefix) is 14 digits & fits the field. Make sure the S/N field is completely empty (no blank spaces) before entering the ESN.

Thank you so much. The light bulb went on when you mentioned "prefix". I can see now that the EDN field already implies the first five digits (displays in grey at the upper right of the field) so I only needed to enter the last nine of the fourteen digits to get the system to process ESN and checksum successfully. My apologies to Uniden. Thanks again!

You enter the key by turning the knob to the correct character and then advancing to the next. The key is hexidecimal so the keypad is useless really and disabled for it.
