I find it very strange that the repeater input frequency is not 5 MHz higher than the repeater output frequency. It that because the Legend is registered in the Bahamas and not required to follow FCC rules?

ITU and FCC put these years ago on what I still call the (Burger King/McDonalds) BKMC (457/467) Pairs (Drive thru) since + 5 would cause interference to other users
the US is +/- 10.225
example of the pair 457.5250 / 467.7500

the ITU is +/- 10.000
example of the pair 457.5250 / 467.5250

ITU does present issues with out GMRS Users here in the US and altho it was to generally be 457 Repeater and 467 Repeater input
it all depended on who interpreted the rules, as we have many 467 Repeater with 457 inputs

if they did 5 mhz them we run into
457.5250 / 462.5250

imagine now
a user on 467.5250 keys up his 462.5250 repeater
which then transmits on 462.5250 causing the 457.5250 to key up (ugh)

I just want to update what I heard while on the Carnival Legend for two weeks from February 2-16, 2026.

I had absolutely no trouble getting my Uniden SDS100 aboard in my carry on bag.

(They did tear apart our two 12 packs of Diet Coke, but that is unrelated to this post.)

I will also point out that I did not spend much time at all monitoring.

I only speak English and the comms I heard were not in English.

I mainly wanted to see what frequencies were in use and whatever subaudible signalling, like Color Codes and PL codes.

Sometimes I just searched 457.500-457.600 in 6.25 kHz steps. Other times I scanned the whole 450-470 range. I had the recorder function enabled. Being in a stateroom, on a ship at sea, there is little else to monitor. I didn't notice anybody with FRS/GMRS/MURS/PMR446 radios, but that is always a possibility. There were at least a few other amateur radio operators on board, but I never noticed any of them with equipment. I should also add that I have noticed that Carnival seems to have a pattern of using different Color Codes on the various frequencies on each ship. The Carnival Legend is scheduled for dry dock April 29, 2026 – May 20, 2026. It is possible that they would upgrade to a Motorola Capacity Plus system. Also, cordless/wireless telephones were in use by some staff.

457.52500 Color Code 11 TS 2 TGID 484 467.750 CC 11 I suspect that this is primary, like listed above.
(I monitored 467.750 and assume that is the input.)

457.53750 Color Code 10 I logged TS 1 with TGID 481

457.57500 103.5 I found it interesting that they also had an analog repeater aboard.

457.60000 CC 13 I logged TS 1 with TGID 487

Hmmm, why do you say they had an analog repeater?

Because I heard 457.575 in analog with PL 103.5 hZ.

I was surprised. I sort of assumed that if they were using MOTOTRBO that is would be all MOTOTRBO. On the other Carnival ships I have been on, if they were MOTOTRBO, there was no analog.

I would disagree just based on that limited info. I've heard frequencies all over the place with PL codes on cruises.
I've heard simplex with similar frequencies and PL codes in the dining rooms across different lines.
But I 'spose anything is possible.

457.5750 (simplex) was/is the Paging Freq, could you have gotten a false CTCSS hit
also 457.5750 103.5 I've got 20 different ships over the years, was this at Sea and no other ships near-by ?

some still maintain Analog channels

While it is possible, I will go back through the recordings and see if any of the time stamps were when were away from other vessels.

That is good to know.

I am also thinking about going through the various frequencies and trying to determine if there is any sort of pattern to how they use the Frequencies, Color Codes and Talkgroup IDs. They have nearly 30 ships at sea.

For example, is 457.525 always Channel 1 in the various Carnival Radio Channel Plans? Is there an analog (legacy) channel plan, a conventional MOTOTRBO/DMR Channel Plan and MOTOTRBO CAPACITY PLUS Channel Plan?

The TGID sequence seems to have a pattern.

Legend TGIDs 480s

Imagination TGIDs 630s

Inspiration TGIDs 670s

Valor TGIDs 800s

Liberty TGIDs 900s

Magic TGIDs 2000s

Mardi Gras TGIDs 140s

Miracle TGIDs 400s

Splendor TGIDs 960s

Sunrise TGIDs 3000s

Valor TGIDs 8002

Venesia TGIDs 50s?

Victory TGIDs 5000s

Vista TGIDs 700s

It is also possible that there really isn't a pattern and they just pick a Color Code.

On my next trip, I would consider taking my Unication G5 that has the UHF band. My next planned cruise will be on the Carnival Dream. The Cruise Ship & Maritime Frequencies list shows them as analog and they might still be analog. They also might be DMR now. The problem with trying to program my Unication in advance is the Color Codes. I can program the common UHF frequencies, both with Time Slot 1 and Time Slot 2, I can program Wildcard for Talkgroup ID, but I need the Color Code. Maybe Unication can add Color Code Wildcard in the future!

Quick look at my notes , nothing stands out for a pattern, even tried looking at the IMO/MMSI :)
Conquest is the 800's
Glory is the 250's
Imagination is the 230's
Inspiration is the 670's
Legend is the 480's

Last Report for the Dream was from 2010 - so it is possible they migrated to DMR
