But not for the better. I checked into 32 LSB last night and was told to get off my channel, followed by 10 minutes of F U and threatening me. I have good groups around here, but no call for that, just said Hello comptech waving at ya'll. I do believe all these welfare recipients on the radio all day screaming and cussing should go get a job. And yes most of them brag about it with their high powered radios.

To anyone looking to acquire commercial radio programming software:

To obtain Motorola software see the Sticky in the Motorola forum.
The various other vendors often permit their dealers to sell the software online (i.e., Kenwood). Please use Google or some other search engine to find a dealer that sells the software. Typically each series or individual radio requires its own software package. Often the Kenwood software is less than $100 so don't be a cheapskate; just purchase it.
For M/A Com/Harris/GE, etc: there are two software packages that program all current and past radios. One package is for conventional programming and the other for trunked programming. The trunked package is in upwards of $2,500. The conventional package is more reasonable though is still several hundred dollars. The benefit is you do not need multiple versions for each radio (unlike Motorola).

Cb is a Wasteland. I haven't had a cb in 20 years, and find Amateur Radio and even Gmrs more respectable.
Sounds exactly why I left CB in the 80's.

CB is still a good back up coms in the event of an emergency and no cell service. I don't go on at all but do carry my President Randy HT in my truck at all times. Never know when crapola happens.

Don’t just single out CB. Most all the HF bands, GMRS, 2m, 70cm, etc are all guilty of having their fair share of inbred yahoo’s transmitting garbage 24/7. It’s nothing new. The lack of FCC enforcement ANYWHERE for the last few decades didn’t help either. Mailing written warnings here and there with no real enforcement doesn’t scare anybody. Plenty of good people out there though. The trick is wading through the cesspool to find them.
It’s entirely possible you spoke to another state and they had no idea who you were. Doesn’t excuse their behavior, but maybe they thought you were barging in on their “local” channel. I had conditions to Australia well past 10pm last night on 38 LSB. Normally conditions drop out shortly after the sun sets. Strange things can happen during solar cycles though.

Well, I have to say that since getting back into CB radio about 2 1/2 years ago, I’ve generally had good experiences. It’s true that the DX channel 28 and channel 6, the Super Bowl have a lot of people who rant and rave and sometimes talk nonsense and curse, and what have you, but that aside most of the conversations I’ve had on the other channels have been fairly good. I am located right here in New York City so you would think of people were going to trash talk anywhere it would be here. Yet I’ve found a group of guys who talk on their base stations regularly at night just about the time and I’m driving back to my place in Manhattan from my office just outside the city and we have a pleasant conversation during the ride. I’ve also found it useful when I’ve been on the highways. I think it’s still valuable communication tool and I like the anonymity but a license free service gives you. In addition to my mobile unit in my SUV I keep a President Randye in my backpack as does my son.

This really depends on the region you're in. Here in the midwest, we have been conditioned with the common sense to behave ourselves and respect our fellow operators. On Amateur Radio, as well as Gmrs. Chicken band is still a Free for all Wasteland here.

Over here in Finland, CB is totally dead. During the summer, you can hear Russians around 27 MHz and 49 MHz.
During the summer, my friend said he wanted a whip aerial for his veedub beach buggy. Even though it was for purely poser value, he wanted a radio too, as an aerial with no radio is too obvious a pose 😁
So, after asking around, he a several old, but working, '80s/'90s radios and I bought a couple of DV-27 clones.
We will be setting things up and on the local sub-reddit I make posts about using CB, which get met with bemusement, as most young folk have no idea what I'm on about.
The idea is that once we are up and running, try and get over locals, probably the old fogies like us, interested and see where that takes things.

I'm in the midwest as well (WI) and it isn't bad at all. The users on the CB around here are generally well behaved. DX can be a mixed bag at times, but DX obviously isn't local and doesn't really count.
GMRS is quite sane as well, however the 42 (listed) repeaters throughout the state seem to be quiet 95% of the time. The Poor Mans Ham / CB 2.0 craze hasn't taken off around here like it has in other states thankfully, and i hope it never does. I guess up here we use the service like it was meant to be used and we don't try to make it something it's not. For instance i set up my small home based repeater for neighborhood watch use.
2m/70cm is also a snooze fest here. If you want to learn about how many jugs of maple syrup someone got from their trees, or want to know what flavor Geritol so and so uses, you're in the right place.

Might not be too interesting to sit around the shack and endure, granted. But there’s nothing on the line for the most part.
Mobile is where problem-solving with modern gear makes it more fun. As consequences are real. Have to help create participation.
Other family men also determined to arrive at their destination with vehicle and passengers in the same shape as at departure share your concerns. Unmet brothers and cousins.
A long series of days on-road makes it crystal clear that it is up to he who helps himself.
NRC is the gateway. FM and stable SSB have made Citizen Band a new thing.
An opinion on CB from even ten years ago much less 1989 is sadly out-of-date as to relevance.
Your radio experience will go far in helping build around family, neighbors and friends the net of 11M given best home & auto installations. Just don’t elect Tampon Tim as club president.

He was transmitting from his home. Once I drove away I keyed my mic and broadcast the guy's street address. I never heard a peep out of him after that.
Never complained about high power. But I did say the admit being on some sort of welfare and they brag about it. I would call this a more of a forum than a social media platform. And P.S. I own a very productive auto repair shop and have worked since I was 14. Iam now 63 and still working and am doing very well. So I don't think the glass houses is correct in your statement.
