• To anyone looking to acquire commercial radio programming software:

Please do not make requests for copies of radio programming software which is sold (or was sold) by the manufacturer for any monetary value. All requests will be deleted and a forum infraction issued. Making a request such as this is attempting to engage in software piracy and this forum cannot be involved or associated with this activity. The same goes for any private transaction via Private Message. Even if you attempt to engage in this activity in PM's we will still enforce the forum rules. Your PM's are not private and the administration has the right to read them if there's a hint to criminal activity.

If you are having trouble legally obtaining software please state so. We do not want any hurt feelings when your vague post is mistaken for a free request. It is YOUR responsibility to properly word your request.

To obtain Motorola software see the Sticky in the Motorola forum.

The various other vendors often permit their dealers to sell the software online (i.e., Kenwood). Please use Google or some other search engine to find a dealer that sells the software. Typically each series or individual radio requires its own software package. Often the Kenwood software is less than $100 so don't be a cheapskate; just purchase it.

For M/A Com/Harris/GE, etc: there are two software packages that program all current and past radios. One package is for conventional programming and the other for trunked programming. The trunked package is in upwards of $2,500. The conventional package is more reasonable though is still several hundred dollars. The benefit is you do not need multiple versions for each radio (unlike Motorola).

This is a large and very visible forum. We cannot jeopardize the ability to provide the RadioReference services by allowing this activity to occur. Please respect this.

Once upon a time the Uniden-built 29's were great AM radios. Uniden and Cobra parted ways and the good quality and performance stayed at Uniden. Cobra's standards dropped considerably on build quality (durability), a rather important aspect to consider for use on construction sites. Have heard many examples of both eras of 29's and the comparison is night/day. Would be willing to wager that Cobra has lost a fair portion of market share to Uniden, President, Galaxy, etc.

Good reviews are wonderful but I suspect they're mostly made by first time CB buyers who haven't compared them directly with other current offerings. No, I don't have stats and specs and testimonials and affidavits to back any of this up, it's just an opinion based on use and experience. Used to be a big Cobra fan but I just think there's better brands out there now for the same or even less $$.

Happy New Year to all and

Thanks for responding.

Happy New Year as well! :)

That reminds me of the Mocat I came across a l-o-n-g time ago when I was at Motorola--had the chance to fix one. Built like a battleship--great radio!

Last time I went to the /\/\ museum in Schaumberg I didn't see one so I asked about them. The curator didn't even know the company had made CBs. He asked if I would donate mine. I declined.

I was once told that because of limited space they couldn't display everything (I think that may have happened when I donated some EVR equipment).

There are a few Mocat's on Ebay, most are not working, parts only.

Since the markings on the I.C.s was replaced with in-house numbers, those radios would make a great reference for someone that wants to find out in-house versus generic part numbers (especially if one has the documents as cross-reference).

I hope it was a just a rumor, I heard some time ago they needed the space for other purposes, packed up all the displays, placed them in storage until a decision was made to relocate or permanently close it.

I hadn't heard that, but possible, I suppose. It's been a long time since I worked there and I've lost touch with what's going on over there.

Go with President radios...I have a President Johnny III, scans, weather & alert, auto scan, hot receiver and more. Its got a small foot-print and is made so it will fit in the dash. Rock solid with front speaker and optional wireless mike input. About 100.00 depending on where you buy it. I have had "cheap" Cobras and Midland CB's........this radio is a world above them for abt. the same price.
The Johnny 3 doesn't have a front speaker...
