• To anyone looking to acquire commercial radio programming software:

Please do not make requests for copies of radio programming software which is sold (or was sold) by the manufacturer for any monetary value. All requests will be deleted and a forum infraction issued. Making a request such as this is attempting to engage in software piracy and this forum cannot be involved or associated with this activity. The same goes for any private transaction via Private Message. Even if you attempt to engage in this activity in PM's we will still enforce the forum rules. Your PM's are not private and the administration has the right to read them if there's a hint to criminal activity.

If you are having trouble legally obtaining software please state so. We do not want any hurt feelings when your vague post is mistaken for a free request. It is YOUR responsibility to properly word your request.

To obtain Motorola software see the Sticky in the Motorola forum.

The various other vendors often permit their dealers to sell the software online (i.e., Kenwood). Please use Google or some other search engine to find a dealer that sells the software. Typically each series or individual radio requires its own software package. Often the Kenwood software is less than $100 so don't be a cheapskate; just purchase it.

For M/A Com/Harris/GE, etc: there are two software packages that program all current and past radios. One package is for conventional programming and the other for trunked programming. The trunked package is in upwards of $2,500. The conventional package is more reasonable though is still several hundred dollars. The benefit is you do not need multiple versions for each radio (unlike Motorola).

This is a large and very visible forum. We cannot jeopardize the ability to provide the RadioReference services by allowing this activity to occur. Please respect this.

Hi all,

I've been a scanner enthusiast for over 35 years, from the Bearcat III to the SDS-100. I've never gotten into amateur radio or anything that need a transceiver. I figured I could always pick up GMR or FMR radio if I needed to do so.

I'm seeing a lot of the CCRs radios all over the place. Being a former cop (a very long time ago), I'm curious what's preventing someone from taking one of these and broadcasting on a VHF emergency frequency like, for example, 154.755?

I know very little about these radios.
Been occuring for years, even back to some of the earlier FPP Radios (Icom V/U 16) with the 1-5-9/3-5-7 code to access the FPP

We come across people like this every so often in my line of work, and thankfully, we have other laws and means of going after these people. We rarely waste time with the FCC. They eventually get turned over to the FCC also, but that's after the real enforcement has already taken place.
The FCC's primary focus is pandering to the telecom cartels. If you are not AT&T, Verizon or T-Mobile, they really do not care.

Learned the same process when dealing with a rogue BDA a couple years ago. The EB was about as interested in pursuing the offender as a retired in place cop. Ended up going the county attorney route and recovered most of our costs (to the tune of 100 grand) from the building owner.

It's gonna be a moot point soon enough because (I feel) anything public safety is gonna get P25'd and encrypted so CCR's will be useless and why (for me) would I spend 600 on a trouble prone digital scanner whose performance frankly isn't worth a sht compared to a commercial radio? The heyday is over for me.. I had the Motorolas in the golden age of HT-220-MX300-MT1000-Sabers but all finito now. Glad I'm old.

In large part because of CCR shenanigans and live streaming of scanner audio. Private business is joining in as well; internet traffic has largely been encrypted for years and LMR should follow suit for the same reasons.

Now, I need to dig out one of my old Icom U16 handhelds. Worked for a company that had piles of them, along with the IC-U400 mobile. I sold these to an Australian company a decade or more ago now, as they were perfect for their UHF citizen's band use. Kept the U16's though, but never knew about the FPP code.

I forgot those existed!

Somewhere I have a box with the U400 and it’s VHF brethren. Along with multiple handheld programmers, remote separation kits, etc.

Haven’t used any of that stuff in years! Now you’ve got me curious.

When I think about it…since then my wife has become a ham so perhaps they all have some use after all!
