Ken, WM has been a battle!!

I have spent multiple nights monitoring those VHF frequencies only to find multiple strong signals with different PL/DPL used.

I’ll check my notes and privately PM you some possibilities. I cannot confirm any of them.

But to my knowledge of the town, none of them sounded right. As in dispatcher was different(possible one for fire HQ) but way of dispatch just seemed “off” for WM.

I could try to monitor that again.

Looks like Scott W2SJW got the Police 1 VHF PL of 85.4 (Thanks Scott (y))
Now their license indicates 3 repeater locations. Its possible they may be using a different PL/DPL for each site???.
That would be slightly unusual, normally the PL/DPL would change on the input frequency only for each repeater site with the Repeater TX pl being the same for all 3 locations. But again if units have to switch channels to access a specific repeater, WTF both TX/RX could also change for each repeater they are accessing, but this would be a possible problem of repeater collisions and interference while one group on one repeater and one group on another...?

Good call.

I’ll monitor 85.4 PL.

I’m pretty familiar with the cars, streets, style of dispatch etc. I’m sure Scott is right though.

Good points Ken. I guess we have to continue listening...

I found the 85.4 PL, When I checked the FCC database, the only license in the northern part of the state came back for WMPD.

West Milford PD uses their lowband 37.020 repeater as their primary dispatch.
I always was under the impression that the VHF was used for vehicular repeaters so the officers could carry VHF hi-band radios and still communicate with dispatch.
However, that's not to say that they may have actually set up VHF repeater(s).

When trying to ID a frequency as WMs, keep in mind they use fleetsync which is fairly uncommon in this area.

Must’ve missed that one then guys. I did some specific CSQ monitoring, and didn’t find 85.4. I found a few others. And I found differing PL’s for both the Fire and PD VHF(which I can understand happening).

I’m gonna plug that in soon on my home BCT15x. I live right next door in Ringwood.

And to make things interesting I will see if it is indeed a patch to lowband, or perhaps a simulcast(like Ringwood). Maybe it is the portables....I’m just unsure.

Those VHF frequencies have stumped me for years. Maybe that PL will finally shed some light...

If you live that close to them, try turning on the scanner's ATT feature. That should filter out only the strongest local signals. Also note that occasionally a scanner's CTCSS decoder can be fooled by certain tones or even background noise, so make sure you're watching the display while listening and only trust tones that appear steadily on the display while there is only normal voice traffic without a lot of noise.

Alright GTR, thanks for the tips! I’ll give it a shot
