Chilton County Fire

I have no idea what the "noise" is. I have heard it as late as 6:00 A.M. while on my way home from work. The only "guess" I have would be that it is some type of "maintenance" or "testing" of the radios/radio system, but that really doesn't make much sense to me.

The radio system may not be digital but said data stream almost certainly is. :)

That site has a recording of everything from Morse code to MDT telemetry, so if its a semi-common format they will probably have it.

What you are hearing is DTMF signaling. Touch tones, like on a telephone. They use about 6 or 7 DTMF tones sent at a fast rate to control and test the weather sirens in the county. I think they run a test each day around 6am. The 911 dispatch send out the tones on the main fire repeater and each siren replys back the same way.

They have been doing this for several years. The tests are delayed if there is an active call in progress on the fire freq. The city of Clanton uses the same system but there sirens are on 155.040 They did test them at midnight and 6am. About a year ago on a nice clear night they hit the wrong button and set off a tornado warning at midnight. Not a cloud in the sky.

I will try to post that list for you this weekend. I have a friend at the radio shop in Clanton. I will try to get him to give me a new list, I know there has been some freq. added in the last year or so.

The dispatch seldom uses any 10 codes or any other codes. They have gone to plain language transmissions on police and fire dispatches. It has been this way for about a year I think. If it is anything they dont want the public to hear they use SouthernLinc.
