CHP Air Speed Enforcement

What happened to the speed enforcement via airplane? I used to hear them but now I hardly ever hear them.

There was an air unit in the Tracy area this past week for two days working 580 between 132 and 205 one day then working I-5 from 580 to 120 the next day. They worked on Blue and from where I was I could hear both the air unit and the ground units talking to each other. But that was the first time I've heard them in this area doing air enforcement since I moved back to California two years ago. So definitely not occurring (near me anyway) as often as it used to.

I do hear CHP's 'air 21', a rotary wing unit, in the area quite often, but always in a support role to some kind of in progress type incident to different agencies. They will usually first be heard contacting the local area CHP dispatch to advise them that they are in the dispatcher's area, and what agency they are assisting as well as what frequency they will be on and in what general location they are helping out at.

I've heard a lot of Air-21 and H-20 down here around Sac lately. Air-21's been refueling at McClellan and H-20's been up in the late afternoons. I travel 80 east quite a bit and haven't seen much speed enforcement around Placer Hills Rd like there used to be. I liked pulling off there and parking up by the big rigs and just watch the ground units pick people off with the help of the fixed wing. Nothing the last several months.

Maybe with things settling financially (long shot I know) here in Cali things will start to change and pick up for the better for the scanner enthusiasts.

It would not surprise me one bit if money is a factor.

Flights crews trimmed back, flight time limited, and fewer "speed enforcement grants" - Yes, there are grants specifically designed to fund overtime and resources for traffic enforcement.

Also - a lot of local law enforcement air units have been either trimmed back or grounded. I know that in the Sacramento area, this has caused local law to seek CHP (state) air support more often.

Listening to CHP in the Stockton area on 44.92 about 2 weeks ago or so I could hear the AIR unit pointing out cars and their types that were good for a stop. I couldn't hear the units response to it, they must have been on the BLUE possibly? It was interesting though because Base would continue to carry on default dispatch duties while the AIR unit would butt in between transmissions while doing their detail. Might of been patched in possibly? My only guess to that detail would be the speed enforcement that you mentioned.

44.92 I will have to plug that channel in or check to see if it is already in as I don't recall picking up anything if I have that programmed in.

As many of you know, I concentrate heavily on monitoring CHP. I monitor base, mobile and extender frequencies and use antennas that give me good signals on low band.

I hear them doing speed enforcement all the time on the I80 corridor by the Antelope scales. This past (3 day) weekend I heard them on BLUE2 doing enforcement on Highway 50 between Sunrise, Hazel & Folsom Blvds. Some of the speeds they clock on that stretch amaze me.

Of course I was just listening to a high speed chase on Turquoise that moved to Black at speeds of 110+. It turned out to be a parolee at large and they only caught him after using a spike strip.

Yes I do hear alot of these happening. Usually ends with a crash then a foot bail unless CHP deems it too dangerous to continue chase.

Bit off from the speed trap discussion, but where is the Blue's antenna located? I know the Stockton Dispatch center has their radio tower right next to the Office and repeats up to the mountain units. After yesterdays fiasco up on the "hill" from the snow, Stockton moved all Stockton and Tracy units to the BLUE while Amador and Calaveras stayed on the White. I programmed in the BLUE base frequency and would only get static que ups but never any audio.

I also get all the Stockton and Tracy unit traffic fine both directions but any transmissions to Amador or Calaveras units I only get either the unit or Dispatch, it alternates.

44.84 BLUE 2 is what I have programmed in. I got static que ups but no audio. Interesting thing, today was the first time I have seen a "Silver Alert" on the CHP CAD website. Missing 89 year old from Citrus Heights. Last seen 3:45am Wednesday morning.

Thanks for those vids Tahoekid. Was the beeping sound in the second video alerting to radar or a police radio signal? Out of all the LE i'd risk playing "chicken" with (minding my own business) CHP always freaks me out. Never know about them.

Beep sound is Escort Redline radar detector. If you notice there are 3 other CHP cars in the video, one making a stop, one on the off ramp turning around. There were 4 in total - Memorial Day weekend - always an excuse to give out more tickets. (Much needed revenue).

Are you still using the BlackVue DR400G-HD ? Hows that holding up?

BlackVue works great. I noticed the price went up on those by almost $100. I can record 9 hours of HD video on a single 32 GB microSD card at 30 fps, or of course double that at 15 fps.

They use very low power from the aircraft, probably 1 or 2 watts since they only need to go less than a mile unobstructed air-to-ground. I got them a few weeks ago again in SAC, and I was only able to hear crisp signal when I was within 2 miles of the kill zone.
