Hello all, i am having trouble programming the Calif Highway patrol into my 396xt. i have found the listings in Radio Reference and tried to copy and paste them into a 'site' and program into my scanner, but to no avail. i am using ARC XT PRO with my scanner. RR does not seem to have a way to import the frequencies into ARC XT PRO to auto fill/program the cells like i was able to do with the rest of the programming. the areas for Calif HighwayPatrol im trying to program are Ventura county and San Luis Obispo county. any assistance is greatly appreciated.

Sure it does, I use it with BCT15X, it will import as long as your logged into it.
Just click on internet on the toolbar, and log in.

Welcome to RR. You should not need to cut and paste. Being a little more specific, select the Internet menu, then RR, and log in using your RR id/pwd as Ronnie said. Then select California, and then the light green Agencies. Scroll down and select CHP. Then select the appropriate divisions from the Data list. Once you have them checked, hit the Import button, and you should see them in ARCXT

thanks fellas. i got it. IF you pick the 'county', it will NOT show you "Department of the Highway Patrol(CHP)" i was picking the counties i travel through and live in...IF you leave the 'county' window alone and it stays in >>>>select<<< then the next window 'agency' shows more options.

i clicked on the ones i want to import and it seems to have worked. took darn near 2 days to get it...but i got it...thank you for the support and instruction...

It should have created a conventional system called"DeptoftheH", which you could have renamed CHP. Do you see that system name come up during the scan? Did you remember to send that system down to the 396? The only thing I can think of is that you may have assigned a quick key to that system, and it is not enabled. If so just, hit the assigned quick key number while scanning.
Edit:
Just noticed that ARCXT assigned group key #1 to each division. I don't recall that happening before. If yours did the same, make sure you have not accidentally disabled Group quick key #1, which will prevent all of the groups from scanning.

the group quick key is active on the scanner itself...as it is indicating by it blinking while scanning. i have 4 systems 1234 and they are scanning through those indicating by blinking when scanning....system 4 is where i have the CHP freqs programmed.

i would post a screen shot , but dont know how to post it here...i DO have teamviewer 7 installed if you wanna take a looksie on how i set up my programming.... =)

Might help if you posted the CHP file. On my PC, it is located in a doc folder My Scanner Data Files. If not, search for *.mem. It should be called CHP. You will find attachment instructions below the submit reply under additional. Click on the manage attachments.

it seems that it is a .rsf file... and it will not let me post that up on here... ??

edit: seems i can save it to a .csv file and not a *.mem file and i cannot upload that one either..

okay. after reviewing the radio reference database, it seems the system is in two forms. FM and P25. if i leave the system as 'conventional' and program it, there is nothing. but it doesnt seem to want to change it to P25 , and when i do, all my programming dissappears...what am i doing incorrectly??

Sorry. Forgot *.mem was 396T file and not 396XT.

Ok, you have exceeded my knowledge of your area. If CHP is also P25, then you are going to have to ask for help on the CA forum.

If you changed to P25 Standard trunking, that is what happens when you change from conventional to trunking. they are so totally different, they have to discard any previous programing. However, if you ONLY changed the audio type for each conventional freq to digital(not trunking), you will not lose any programing. Again, not sure where you are getting this P25 info.

Department of the Highway Patrol (CHP) Scanner Frequencies and Radio Frequency Reference

scroll down to San Luis Obispo dispatch center and the Ventura Dispatch center...under 'mode' it will be FM and some of them are P25. this is where im getting some trouble i believe....

Hi, badhabit, only the officers mobile extender is P25 and has a very short range. It's not worth programming those frequencies as you have to be very close to the officers vehicle in order to hear them. I'm not sure why you are having such a difficult time hearing your local division. I live in the "Golden Gate Division" and can hear my county as well as most of the surrounding counties very well. I also have a BC396XT.

You downloaded everything directly from RR, right? Another possibility is your antenna. The stock Uniden antenna is not very good. I upgraded to a Diamond RH77CA and and it was a huge improvement. I also have a Antennacraft ST-2 on my roof for my 996XT and the reception is incredible! You may want to consider getting one of those if you want to use your 396XT as a base.

Yup, might be a antenna issue, you could get a nice low cost AntennaCraft ST2 and put it up outside and see what happens.

Also are you able to pick up anything else with your scanner? Like airplanes, two-way radios etc.?

800MHz Scanner Antenna : Scanner Antennas | RadioShack.com

it worked well on my last RS Pro46 ive had for years. and still works great today. it is the BNC type i got so i have to use the adapter.

i have not programmed any of those to see if they work. i guess i could program the AFB here and pick up their transmission.
