I have been programming my SDS100 and BCD436HP for a trip to the Portland area I will be there for 2 weeks. I'll really be down in Clackamas County staying but traveling throughout Oregon also. I'll be in Wilsonville to be more specific.

I am legally blind and programming takes me forever. I have a GPS unit and will use that when going out to the Pacific Coast and towards Mount Hood. But I'm trying to program and tag things in my radio so that I can actually see them and have them in the order I like.

My questions are these. Should I be paying attention to the Washington County / Clackamas County / Newberg TRS or the WCCCA TRS more as I program? One seems to have law enforcement on it and the other seems to be more fire. I'm more interested in the law enforcement but I do want to monitor anything Public Safety I can. In military traffic as well as state and federal traffic as well. Is one system used over the other out of these two? I've already programmed in the Multnomah County / Portland radio systems and TriMet as well as the Oregon State Radio Project and a few more systems.

I may be moving up to the area in the future since the Portland area is so beautiful and has real public transportation which I need and don't have down here in Texas.

I also wonder if there are any other radio systems or frequencies anyone recommends for the travels and for the areas I'll be in? When I was up there 2 years ago I thought that Wilsonville did have their own police department but I can't seem to find any listing for them today if they do. Do they just talk on one of the CC law channels?

Thanks for any help!

Yes program the Washington/Clackamas county system. I program them as two separate systems, one for each county and just put in the sites for each respective county. I also program all the TGs because it is always easier to lock something out than to add. There is both fire and LE from each county on the system.

If your scanner is digital, you should also program the new Multnomah county system. That will give you the traffic in Portland, but again you can lock out what you don't want.

The other frequencies I monitor when up there include Oregon State Patrol and Oregon Dept of Forestry. If going to Mt Hood, you'll want the national forest and/or other freqs related to that. There's a LOT to monitor.

If you’re going to the Oregon coast you might want to program in all the Marine VHF frequencies. You’ll hear US Coast Guard broadcasts on Ch 16 and Ch 22A, but also you’ll sometimes hear fishing boats or crab boats or charter boats chatting on some of the other channels. Occasionally there’s a rescue. You never know what you might hear.

Thanks for the reply and I do have those frequencies programmed in. I used to live down closer to Galveston Texas and heard a lot of interesting marine traffic through the years. Would be good to hear some more :) I appreciate your reply.

I don't think any agencies have switched to the digital WCCCA system yet, so anything on it should also be on the Washington County/Clackamas County analog system. As for Wilsonville, their police department is actually just a contract with Clackamas County Sheriff, and they do not have their own channel. The wiki page says Wilsonville is always on Law 1.

Rosecitytransit is correct. If you are using sentinel, I can send you the programming I have for my 436hp. It picks up Clackamas County very well from downtown Portland.

Thanks for your reply and I am up here in Wilsonville now and have been hearing Clackamas County mainly on the analog C-COM talk groups and I've been monitoring this morning the system as well as the OSP traffic and other traffic on the Oregon State radio Project. I hear that they are still using the old VHF frequencies in a lot of areas even though many of these users are patched or else on some of the TRS in the area. I'm picking up things very well here with just the 800 MHz Radio Shack antenna I had bought years ago when they had that real good one. I've got just about every system for Multnomah County and Clackamas County as well as other Statewide systems programmed in and I'm hearing things wonderfully. I just wish the SDS 100 battery replacement had already come out since I get about 5 1/2 on the battery unless I'm plugged into a power source. But it does seem like the analog and digital systems definitely have traffic and they really do come in good here. Thank you for your help. I and I'll report back on some of the interesting stuff I find.
