VANCOUVER -- Clark County voters will cast ballots in April on raising the countywide sales tax by one-tenth of 1 percent to buy a $50 million emergency communications system.
The Board of County Commissioners today unanimously agreed to put the matter on the April 22 ballot after testimony that Sheriff Garry Lucas, every city council, and each fire district in the county supported the tax increase, said county administrator Bill Barron.
The increase would generate $5.7 million to $6 million a year for emergency communications.
The county's existing system uses analog technology that the manufacturer will stop supporting in 2012. The new system, which would support radio communication among public safety agencies as well as 9-1-1 operations, would be digital, Barron said.
The measure had been proposed to run on the March ballot, but the board pushed it to April. ?
