I didn't live here then, but I wonder if it was like the 1978 blizzard we had in Boston. That's the one that dropped nearly 4 feet of snow on the level. All driving, except of course for emergency vehicles, was banned for a week and there were 3500 snowed in vehicles on the interstate west of the city. Only 2 fatalities in those cars. We used snowmobiles to rescue the stranded occupants.

It wasn't a blizzard...

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Columbus_Day_Storm

"On a larger scale, the Columbus Day Storm of 1962 is a contender for the title of most powerful extratropical cyclone recorded in the U.S. in the 20th century; with respect to wind velocity, it is unmatched by the March 1993 "Storm of the Century" and the "1991 Halloween Nor’easter" (aka "The Perfect Storm"). In the eastern United States, only hurricanes of Category 3 or higher have brought winds of the magnitude witnessed in Oregon and Washington on Columbus Day, October 12, 1962."

So where did the "giant storm" go yesterday?

In terms of fatalities and property damage - the 1938 hurricane stands as one of the worst disasters in North American history. In a matter of hours, 688 people were killed, 4500 were injured, and more than 75,000 buildings were damaged. The states of New York, Connecticut, and Rhode Island, suffered their worst natural disaster in recorded history. The tidal wave like storm-surge that hit Long Island and Rhode Island was so severe - that earthquake instruments 3,000-miles away recorded it on seismographs. As a final cruelty - the residents of the North Atlantic states had little or no warning that this extreme meteorological event was unfolding before them.

I spoke too soon. I wasn't following the news. Looking at the TV this AM, that was (still is) quite a storm. Fortunately, the coast range protects us here in Portland.

The Associated Press

SEATTLE (AP) - The Coast Guard in Seattle says today's storm knocked out communication with the station at Astoria. So the Coast Guard launched a C-130 from Sacramento to serve as a communications platform in case of emergency on the Northwest coast. Petty Officer Tara Molle (moll) says so far there has been no emergency other than the loss of communications.
