• To anyone looking to acquire commercial radio programming software:

Please do not make requests for copies of radio programming software which is sold (or was sold) by the manufacturer for any monetary value. All requests will be deleted and a forum infraction issued. Making a request such as this is attempting to engage in software piracy and this forum cannot be involved or associated with this activity. The same goes for any private transaction via Private Message. Even if you attempt to engage in this activity in PM's we will still enforce the forum rules. Your PM's are not private and the administration has the right to read them if there's a hint to criminal activity.

If you are having trouble legally obtaining software please state so. We do not want any hurt feelings when your vague post is mistaken for a free request. It is YOUR responsibility to properly word your request.

To obtain Motorola software see the Sticky in the Motorola forum.

The various other vendors often permit their dealers to sell the software online (i.e., Kenwood). Please use Google or some other search engine to find a dealer that sells the software. Typically each series or individual radio requires its own software package. Often the Kenwood software is less than $100 so don't be a cheapskate; just purchase it.

For M/A Com/Harris/GE, etc: there are two software packages that program all current and past radios. One package is for conventional programming and the other for trunked programming. The trunked package is in upwards of $2,500. The conventional package is more reasonable though is still several hundred dollars. The benefit is you do not need multiple versions for each radio (unlike Motorola).

This is a large and very visible forum. We cannot jeopardize the ability to provide the RadioReference services by allowing this activity to occur. Please respect this.

I think adding PL/DPL makes sense. I look forward to reading the reviews on this. I also like the USB-C charging port.

I look forward to someone comparing this on 26/27 Mhz, to VHF MURS 151/154 Mhz, to GMRS 462.xxxx Mhz and 902-928 Mhz DTR/DLR radios. All can be used either license free (or easy to obtain GMRS license.) with just there OEM rubber duck antennas.

I assume that one a cruise ship, Motorola DTR/DLRs will be the best for range. Outside, say ATVing in the woods, how will 4 watts FM 27 Mhz on a rubber duck compare to 2 watts FM 151/154 Mhz on a rubber duck to 4 watts FM 462 Mhz on a rubber duck.

The rubber duck will be very inefficient on any of them, but perhaps more so on CB 26/27 Mhz.

The SMA antenna connection might be a bit small to support any effectively sized CB antenna. However, the actual perceived use for these radios may involve remoted antennas more than blades or 50 inch whips.

My wife and I are ATVers. Our ATV club uses GMRS.

I have a few friends that are Jeep owners. If I recall correctly, the Jeep off-road community also has some folks trying to decide GMRS vs MURS to keep in touch. I suspect that at least some will give FM CB a try. Maybe a CB mobile radio, with an antenna a bit better than a rubber duck, on FM mode using PL/DPL might work. Honestly, even ATVing, if you can have somewhat reliable simplex range up to a mile, during a group ride, that would be pretty helpful, in some cases.

I cannot help but wonder about the quality of construction, and how much filtering is utilized in the design.

Sorry.....kinda got confused between this and a President thread......so....in reality, I have no clue on your question....sorry
I thought it was something like that, or you knew some details about these radios. I would have been very surprised if these radios were made by President and still hit the listed price point.

Why Only 2 watts on AM ?
The published specs don't say if the AM power output is carrier, average, PEP or something else, and may have been written by a non-technical marketing person.
If the Peak Envelope Power on AM with 100% modulation is 4 watts then the carrier has to be 1 watt.

400 custom channels are smoke and mirrors. They are built on the different PL/DCS tones plus using AM or FM choices. In reality, a pair of radios on AM and another pair on FM in the same area on the same channel will not be able to carry on simultaneous conversations. The PL and DCS tones only prevent the receiving radio from letting the signal through to be heard.

Doesn't look half bad, I wouldn't mind having one in my arsenal. Got the option to do clean toned FM with another savvy enthusiast and backwards classic AM compatibility for everyone else. USB-C Charging is a welcome option.

Non-Amateur radio marketing is all smoke & mirrors. Because they know that people are ignorant of the technology, and will remain ignorant of the technology up to & past the point of buying the radio, using it a few times & putting it in a drawer for the next 2 decades because they spent the 1st 10 minutes out of the box trying to talk around the world on 400 channels & couldn't get a response. But the manufacturer got their money already so who cares.
