Move to NC...
Thomas -
Name is Chuk Gleason; been living here in the Triangle (Raleigh-Durham- Chapel Hill) for a bunch o' years. Known that KE4ZNR guy for a bunch, too, tho' haven't heard him on ham radio lately. (Then again, I haven't been on local repeaters much for a while... but..... I digress.........)
Wife & I have raised two kids here, managed to get them thru Wake County school system without too much trouble; then again, we're involved... not like some other parents who just want to shuck the kids out the door, and not support their education with the discipline of helping them learn.
Here's one man's spout, stealing shamelessly from other sources:
Raleigh has been described as the city whose favorite color is tan. Nothing to write home about. Your aunt Mildred.
Seriously, there's a distinction between 'inside the beltline' and 'outside the beltline'; Inside can tend toward the old money, or neighborhoods undergoing gentrification. Outside, which has had almost all its growth in the last 45 years or so (since IBM first came down here to Research Triangle Park);
Unfortunately, the YMCA on Hillsborough Street, where Barney Fife used to stay when he came to Raleigh ('the corner room!') has been torn down, and is being rebuilt.
But, there's NC State University (GO WOLFPACK!!!!) (My older daughter is a sophomore), Peace College, Meredith College, Shaw University, St. Augustine's College, (last 2 are HBCU's)
Garner: just to the south of Raleigh. Redneck cousin to Raleigh. Here's a clue to Garner's psychology: "Garner Iced Tea" - you go into a restaurant, get just water with your meal, and a couple pieces of lemon. If you're with a group, ask for their lemons. Squeeze the lemons into your water, then stir in several packets of sugar. Voila'! Garner Iced Tea!!
Redneck, and proud.
Cary. Hmmm, So many people call it "Concentrated Area of Relocated Yankees" I guess, my wife & I fit that. (both from around Buffalo, NY originally) Oh, well. Used to be a small, snooty little suburb of Raleigh. Now it's a big, snooty suburb of Raleigh. Has a somewhat well-deserved reputation for town government that is into telling you how to live, and how to look while you're doing it. I pay my taxes, and thumb my nose at such efforts. I once asked a native: "Peggy?? Has Cary always been a snooty little town, overly impressed with itself?"
"Why yay-essss!!"
Anyway, Wake is a big county. Still a fair amount of rural land, if that's what you want. Little towns, like Holly Springs, Wendell, Knightdale, Wake Forest.
Durham. City & County. Has probably an over-reported crime rate. Home to Duke University, and NC Central University (another HBCU). And the Durham Bulls, minor league baseball. Has a rich history, esp. of black culture - if you ever watched Cosby Show; one time there was a reference to Clif Huxtable's parents having grown up in Durham.
Chapel Hill. UNC-C.H. ie "Carolina". (or as a State-grad friend says "Orange County Community College") Tar Heels. Medical/Business/law. Chapel Hill is perhaps one of the most stereotypical college towns.
It's a good place. tho I'd probably have trouble living in Chapel Hill; too much 'Carolina Blue'.
I know, nothing I've written about has to do with scanning!! Marshall can address that !
And Marshall & I know a couple hams who are real estate people, who could help you in that regard.
Email me private if you have any more questions.
