• To anyone looking to acquire commercial radio programming software:

Please do not make requests for copies of radio programming software which is sold (or was sold) by the manufacturer for any monetary value. All requests will be deleted and a forum infraction issued. Making a request such as this is attempting to engage in software piracy and this forum cannot be involved or associated with this activity. The same goes for any private transaction via Private Message. Even if you attempt to engage in this activity in PM's we will still enforce the forum rules. Your PM's are not private and the administration has the right to read them if there's a hint to criminal activity.

If you are having trouble legally obtaining software please state so. We do not want any hurt feelings when your vague post is mistaken for a free request. It is YOUR responsibility to properly word your request.

To obtain Motorola software see the Sticky in the Motorola forum.

The various other vendors often permit their dealers to sell the software online (i.e., Kenwood). Please use Google or some other search engine to find a dealer that sells the software. Typically each series or individual radio requires its own software package. Often the Kenwood software is less than $100 so don't be a cheapskate; just purchase it.

For M/A Com/Harris/GE, etc: there are two software packages that program all current and past radios. One package is for conventional programming and the other for trunked programming. The trunked package is in upwards of $2,500. The conventional package is more reasonable though is still several hundred dollars. The benefit is you do not need multiple versions for each radio (unlike Motorola).

This is a large and very visible forum. We cannot jeopardize the ability to provide the RadioReference services by allowing this activity to occur. Please respect this.

That's not what I asked. I asked if the version you're using is officially and properly supported in Windows 8. The way to determine this is to read the release notes located in the README file in the CPS installation folder.

I think the current version is at or above R06.12.05.

You're not screwed... You could install a older version of Windows, say XP, or run XP in a VM on your Win 8 machine...

It certainly does sound like a compatibility issue you have there.

Ribless USB Cable-Full Function
Set to COM3
CPS Doesn't allow me the option to change the COM port

How do I change the COM port assignment within the CPS software?

Unlike some of the other CPS's, the Pro Series does not have a specific menu choice to set your preferences.

HOWEVER!!!!!!! If you fire up the CPS, connect the cable and the radio, click on File and select Read Device. You will get a little window that ask you to set the comm port. Here you can select the comm port that matches your port setting in the PC's Devices and Printers.

If you click the Read button on the icon bar, the software presumes you've already set the port by doing what I just described above, and you will get the exact error you have been describing.

I know it's backwards and kind of hidden but that's how it works. So whenever you start a new programming session, don't use the Read button. Instead, File ---> Read Device and set your port.

R06.12.08 was released right around the end of 2012. The only change is that it won't let you program anything WB without the entitlement key.

So that would tell me that windows 8 is unsupported.

Why the OP would rather dick around with Win 8 rather than installing the CPS he has onto a machine with a clean install of XP is beyond me...

The solution to his problem is simple.

The solution to his problem is simple.

The ONLY machine I have at this time is Win 8 or I would do a fresh XP install

I thtink you need to look at getting another little older computer that you then have XP Pro/SP3 on that you can do all your programing on.

Alot of software is not able to run under Win 7 or 8 and there are hundreds of people having the same problem.

If you need a XP computer, I have several that have been rehabed from companys upgrading, they have Xp Pro/sp3 and are ready to go.
