Right, because all TV stations, radio stations, newspapers, and other forms of media never discuss crime related stories.

The individuals should be thanked for having spent much time and effort in keeping the website updated. But ultimately, if the OPP can effectively disseminate their news releases through other more effective mediums, than so be it. In a matter of seconds, information and updates can be sent through Facebook and Twitter to thousands of followers amongst both media and communities. All things to consider, but I wouldn't for an instant believe that the citizens of Ontario are "in the dark" from this point onwards.

I don't facebook, and the OPP's twitter feed doesn't look like much. I doubt I'm gonna read about small town crimes or other events in my area on the OPP's twitter or Facebook page....

The people that were running this site were only doing so as a volunteer service based out of London, ON. maybe they couldn't afford to have the service running anymore, who knows. It really does suck though that it shut down, because it was a great resource of the weekly news reports. And we all know, that the official OPP website has nothing even close to the dissemenation of info that crime alerts had. Even though it was simple.

Why did they shut down?

Crime Alerts Network

Effective 1600 hours, Monday, December-20-10 CRIME ALERTS has ceased operations

In 2000, this website was established to facilitate better communication
between the Ontario Provincial Police and you.

Crime Alerts served the purpose it was designed for. 11-years later, the OPP has developed and is currently utilizing a variety of communication and social media portals to disseminate and communicate emergency and non-emergency police information. As a result of this progress and to ensure consistency provincially, please visit the official Ontario Provincial Police website and utilize their applications.

This is sad but since crimealerts shut down the Windsor Star is running stories from Chatham Kent PS website for their "police blotter" stories. They were just C&P stories from alerts before. So much for the news media keeping us informed.

Who ran the site??

Hello,
Does anyone know who ran the crime alerts web site? I'm a reporter in Haliburton, ON. and am trying to locate the site administrator. Any tips would be helpful. I can be emailed at: mark@countyvoice.ca
Thank you
