I just received my BC296D and I have figured out just about everything from this great website, about my scanner and how to use it. I do have one question that I can't seem to find the answer on myself. I have no clue what CTCSS and DCS is, and what to set it on. I only monitor Motorola Type II analog and digital as well as a few conventional channels. Do these systems require the use of the CTCSS and DCS decoding. Thanks in advance for all help.

Trunked systems do not use CTCSS or DCS codes. Conventional systems use them, but not all conventional systems use them. If a system doesn't use them, they would be listed as CSQ. You don't have to program them in unless you are hearing other traffic on the frequency that is from another system you don't want to hear. The RadioReference database is a good source for these codes, but you can use the scanner to search for the code. It is a somewhat slow process with the 296.

They work really well. They are the PL tone settings. I have a channel that has like 10 different fire departments on them. I grew tired of hearing them all at the same time. I just entered in their respective "tone" data and then put them each in a different channel. Works great!
