I just found this on FaceBook, after reading this, I have no idea if this is "real" or just a scam.

About Encryption Key​

Important
Custom Firmware will not find the Encryption Key. It is something that needs to be obtained in other ways.

You can decrypt if you have enough time and resources. You should read about Alan Turing & co.

I'm not sure what you mean by scam. I've never seen GitHub used as a hotbed of scam activity. A quick skim of the project, I didn't see anyone asking for time or money. Though I didn't parse the code. That doesn't mean the project will ever get off the ground or succeed, but it doesn't mean it's a scam either.

My concern about a scam, the link at the bottom to make a payment via crypto. You install this and pay, then get nothing or they lock your radio and make you pay to get access again...

Why bother unless the Agency you are monitoring gives you the key? Are you saying this firmware will decode the key??

I was always lead to believe that the firmware was locked down and I have never seen anybody offer any custom firmwares for this at all.

Ahhh, sorry, I must've missed that. Yeah, since"keys" are coming from "elsewhere" I'm missing the value of the software. Selling a car without the engine...

I guess it gives you an option to enter the keys, if you have them? I know some AOR radios allow this for NXDN I think.

If this works it could be useful for public agencies. Instead of having to give subscriber radios to such as news agencies, they could just give the key and tell them to get a scanner.

I tried this software a year ago. You still need the keys. IT basically allows you to load the key in the frequency/channel. Then you can listen. You still need the key.

The fact somebody has "hacked" the firmware at all is interesting... I don't care about encryption, but being able to change the firmware code, to change some features would be great.

I used to work for the Navy as a senior radio maintenance technician repairing Motorola encrypted radios running DES encryption. Back in the day, if you bought a Mx-360 with the DES encryption boards, Motorola told me that it would take 20 years + using a fast computer running continously to find out a encryption key (if the key you're looking for was never changed - and I was the POC who changed the encryption keys routinely). So, without an encryption key, it's not gonna happen. I wouldn't use any firmware except what is approved by the manufacturer (Uniden). Unless you want to just buy a new scanner, because chances are you will brick it.

And now DES is easily cracked. Times change.
